20 brilliant quotes from Game Of Thrones, by Jim Shelley

Jaime’s love for his sister, Cersei’s hatred of the dragons, and Dany’s ‘complicated’ relationship with Jon…20 brilliant quotes from Game Of Thrones, by Jim Shelley

Game Of Thrones has millions of fans across the world that can probably be divided into only two categories: the ones who prefer the episodes with epic battle scenes, and those who don’t. Thrill-seekers with short-attention spans that like action sequences with thousands of extras and ropey CGIs of dragons, or more sensitive, intelligent, aficionados of actual actors (like the excellent Peter Dinklage or Lena Headey) performing brilliantly witty dialogue.

You can probably guess which category I’m in.

Yes, the first! All-time favourite: The Red Wedding, although that was more a massacre than skirmish between armies. (Basically just a fight at the bride and groom’s reception party.)

Having said that, The Battle Of Winterfell in last week’s show The Long Night left me cold – until Arya Stark’s late strike in injury-time secured victory. It was too murky, dull, and, um, long.

You can tell what type of episode you’re in for by how much Dinklage and Headey feature.

Largely absent in The Battle Of Winterfell, Tyrion and Cersei (GoT’s best characters) dominated The Long Night’s follow-up.

20 Great Moments from this week’s Game Of Thrones.

Thrilling: Largely absent in The Battle Of Winterfell, Tyrion and Cersei (GoT’s best characters) dominated The Long Night’s follow-up

1. ‘You shouldn’t envy me. Mostly I live in the past’

– Bran’s role as GoT’s weird existential poet/pretentious prat continued with his forlorn statement to Tyrion. Cheer up mate!

2. ‘If it’s a boy we want to name him Jon !’

‘I hope it’s a girl’

– Jon Snow sets a new Personal Best for being A Miserable Git, quashing Gilly and Samwell’s intended tribute.

3. ‘He’ll be happier up there’

– Jon Snow gives Ghost to Tormund to take North, although to be honest his direwolf didn’t look that happy being abandoned by him.

4. ‘I’m not a Lady, I never have been. That’s not me’

– Arya rejects Gendry’s proposal of marriage by pointing out why she can’t become his Lady of Storm’s End. Sure enough he didn’t argue.

5. ‘We need a word…’

– Arya’s curt command/request to Jon after Daenerys made a speech (‘we have won the Great War. Now, we will win the next war. In all seven kingdoms, men will live without fear and cruelty, under their rightful queen!’) mostly aimed at Sansa Stark and her sister.

‘I’m not a Lady, I never have been. That’s not me’: Arya rejects Gendry’s proposal of marriage by pointing out why she can’t become his Lady of Storm’s End. Sure enough he didn’t argue

6. ‘I need to tell you something but you need to swear you’ll never tell another soul !’

– Jon Snow prepares to take the plunge and tell Arya and Sansa that, as he’s a Targaryen, Daenerys is his Auntie. A build-up you only hear when the secret is really juicy and guaranteeing you won’t keep it. ‘I swear,’ Sansa muttered eventually, clearly with her fingers crossed behind her back.

7. ‘She’s his aunt. Do you think she wants to share the throne?!’

– Varys points out the two problems with Tyrion’s idea that Jon and Daenerys could rule together if they married, correctly sensing that incest wasn’t Dany’s main concern.

‘I need to tell you something’: Jon Snow prepares to take the plunge and tell Arya and Sansa that, as he’s a Targaryen, Daenerys is his Auntie

8. ‘Khaleesi is a girl who walked into a fire with three stones and walked out with three dragons. How could she not believe in destiny?!’

– Tyrion tries to dissuade Varys from turning against Daenarys in favour of Jon Snow (‘a war hero’).

9. ‘I’ve served tyrants most of my life. They all talk about destiny’

– Varys the Spider’s withering dismissal of Khaleesi’s constant claim for becoming ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

10. ‘It’s not a secret anymore, it’s information’

– Varys the Spider/Spin Doctor gives Tyrion his expert assessment that 8 people knowing about Daenerys being Jon Snow’s auntie is at least four too many.

‘‘Khaleesi is a girl who walked into a fire with three stones’: Tyrion tries to dissuade Varys from turning against Daenarys in favour of Jon Snow (‘a war hero’)

11. ‘We still have to take King’s Landing. Maybe Cersei will win and kill us all’

– Tyrion finds a solution to the dilemma whether Jon or Daenerys should accede to the Iron Throne.

12. ‘I’ve never slept with a knight before!’

‘I’ve never slept with anyone before!’

– Jaime and Brienne get frisky.

13. ‘You’re a good man and you can’t save her. Stay here. Stay with me. Please. Stay!’

– Brienne tearfully tries to persuade Jaime Lannister not to leave her and go back to King’s Landing for his sister.

‘We still have to take King’s Landing. Maybe Cersei will win and kill us all’: Tyrion finds a solution to the dilemma whether Jon or Daenerys should accede to the Iron Throne

14. ‘I once pushed a boy out of a window and crippled him for life because of Cersei. I strangled my cousin with my own bare hands – because of Cersei. I would’ve murdered every man, woman, and child in Riverrun for her. She’s hateful and so am I’

– Jaime’s low self-esteem gets the better of him as he (rather bluntly) counters Brienne’s more optimistic opinion of him, then riding off leaving her sobbing.

15. ‘When the war is won, the lion [her] shall rule the land, the kraken [him] shall rule the sea and our child [non-existent] will rule them all!’

– Cersei continues to con Euron into thinking she is pregnant with his child. Admittedly not very difficult, even if the baby’s father is her brother.

A lot on her mind: Cersei continues to con Euron into thinking she is pregnant with his child. Admittedly not very difficult, even if the baby’s father is her brother

16. ‘Without Littlefinger and Ramsey and the rest, I would’ve stayed a little bird all my life’

– Sansa Stark accentuates the positive side of years of abuse and manipulation, countering The Hound’s view that her life would’ve been different if she’d left King’s Landing with him.

17. ‘Kill a few hundred they make you a lord. Kill a few thousand, they make you a king!’

– Bronn sums up Game Of Thrones, and modern warfare, in a nutshell.

18. ‘It must have felt good sticking a knife into that horned f**ker!’

– The Hound to Arya, about killing The Night King. Probably the understatement of the series.

Pensive: Sansa Stark accentuates the positive side of years of abuse and manipulation

19. ‘Help me! I don’t want to see this city burn. I don’t want to hear the screams of children burning alive!’

‘No, it’s not a pleasant sound’

– Tyrion’s emotive entreaty to Qyburn doesn’t quite get the reaction he’d hoped for.

20. ‘Dracarys !’

– Missandei was asked by Cersei if she had any last words before her execution. But she had only one (in High Valyrian): ‘Dragonfire !’ Interpreted as a signal to Khaleesi to unleash the wrath of her babies/beasts, which she was probably going to do anyway.
