Brendan O’Carroll wife: ‘Terrifying for him’ Jennifer Gibney on Mrs Brown’s Boys ‘mistake’

Jennifer Gibney, 55, opened up about a “funny” on-stage mishap involving her husband Brendan O’Carroll, 63, who plays Irish matriarch Agnes Brown in BBC’s Mrs Brown’s Boys. The actress revealed Brendan usually “acknowledges” mistakes when they happen and refuses to “gloss over” errors. The couple recently embarked on a touring production of Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Musical and Jennifer exclusively told Express.co.uk that audience members should expect the unexpected. She explained: “As you’ve seen on the TV show, if a mistake happens Brendan isn’t going to gloss over it, he will acknowledge that it happens and leave it in.

He just left him on so he had to try to join in at various stages, which was terrifying for him.

“If someone goes out on stage and you’re in an arena and the microphone goes, Brendan always says there’s no point in pretending to the audience that the microphone is working when they know it’s not, so someone from the sound desk will walk on with a microphone.

“Anything that happens on stage he just goes with it and makes it part of the show.”

Jennifer continued: “The audience come out and people say, ‘I was there the night this happened’. There’s always something unexpected that happens.

“If you went to see the show twice you wouldn’t see the same show. It grows every night because Brendan thinks on the fly and ideas come to him where he can mess around with the rest of us on stage and make it challenging night by night.”

Giving an example of Brendan’s mischievous ways, the Cathy Brown star recalled: “One of the actors who isn’t in one of the dancer teams was on stage and he just left him on so he had to try to join in at various stages, which was terrifying for him but very funny for the rest of us.

“It keeps everyone on their toes, there’s no sense of complacency because you have no idea what’s going to happen.”

Elsewhere, Jennifer Gibney addressed an aspect of her home life with the comedian, as she revealed they share a passion for golf as a couple.

Discussing their love of the sport, she explained: “We love golf, it’s our escape.

“When we’re at home we play golf most days. It’s one of the few places you can go and people know you’re unavailable on the phone or by email.”

The couple, who are currently based in Florida, live next to a golf course and manage to enjoy plenty of practice.

Jennifer admitted: “We’re not doing a lot of golf on the road but we did.

“We live in Florida and we played quite a bit there because we live right by a golf course, so we had a lovely few weeks of being able to practice.”

However, the TV personality revealed there is an element of competitiveness in her relationship with Brendan, as she added: “We give each other a run for our money, I’m a little bit competitive with him.”

The star recently showed off her golfing skills in the Celebrity Cup, which was held at Celtic Manor last month.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Jennifer divulged: “I’m really excited because last year I was ill at this time and I’d never played myself so I was determined to get my handicap down to 18, which I have to do in order to compete.

“So I worked on that to get my place on the team and I was incredibly nervous and about 20 minutes before I started I was in the changing room and my legs were shaking and I’m going, ‘Why did I do this, why am I doing this voluntarily?’”

Luckily, Jennifer revealed she managed to overcome her nerves, as she concluded: “I got that out of the way and it’s such a relaxed atmosphere and wonderful weekend, so although I’m nervous I’m really excited. It’s a great fun weekend.”
