Black Mirror: ‘We have no morals’ Creators reveal scene they had to CUT
Although Black Mirror is known for its dark nature, there was one episode that provided some hope in a world that sucks the hope out of everything else.
Season three episode San Junipero will be remembered for the blossoming romance between Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).
Whereas most episodes of the Netflix series destroy any optimism, this episode gave the pair the opportunity to survive and head off into a potentially beautiful future.
They fell in love in San Junipero and it is a world where people who die carry on living and it is set up to be a twisted place.
Other than that we have no morals, no sense of taste
Although the pair had a happy ending, co-creator Charlie Brooker has revealed it was originally going to take a more sinister and sick twist.
He told Refinery29: “There’s a couple of things we’ve cut out because it would be tonally a bit off in the episode.
“In San Junipero, I’d started writing a scene where you see Gugu’s character [Kelly] in a kindergarten and then you realise afterwards that these are children who had died and been uploaded to this world.
“See! “In many ways it was a beautiful image, but it was so heart-rending [that] it destabilised everything else. So, sometimes we won’t put something in for that reason but other than that, we’re pretty comfortable…”
Co-creator Annabel Jones added: “Other than that we have no morals, no sense of taste.”
Brooker agreed and responded: “Or guidance! No filter! We’re idiots!”
Meanwhile, in the most recent season there is a special appearance by Miley Cyrus as Ashley O and the creators have spoken about attracting the pop sensation.
Speaking to press including Express.co.uk at a recent launch for the episode, Annabel said: “I still can’t believe it. We were very lucky.”
Charlie added: “We sent her the script of someone who played a popstar. We wanted someone like Miley Cyrus but we thought that was f**king stupid talk.
“We figured we had nothing to lose by trying to get our script to her.”
Thankfully, Miley was attracted to the script, and Charlie continued: “We thought we’d just be ignored and we got the script to her and it turned out she had seen the show and liked it, read the script and liked it.
“Before we knew it we were having a Skype chat and she said she would do it.”
Annabel praised the Wrecking Ball hitmaker, saying: “She read the script and as you can imagine there were a few things in the script that she identified with.
Charlie joked: “I think she said, ‘It would ps people off and psing people off is kind of my thing’.”
He has also previously revealed the likelihood of them producing another interactive episode after Bandersnatch.
Season five has also revealed details about a former character that have been left unanswered for years.
Black Mirror season five is available to stream on Netflix now.
