Drew Barrymore's Hair Looked Like "Coughed Up Bird Feathers" Until She Tried THIS

Drew Barrymore isn’t afraid to spill some beauty tea (and sometimes quite literally, as last year she shared her hack for whitening tea-stained teeth). The Santa Clarita Diet star is days deep in her #BeautyJunkieWeek, during which she posts hair, makeup, and skincare tips. Even though we’re still not over the genius way she uses aloe vera for skin care, she also threw another glorious tidbit into the mix. The 43-year-old Flower Beauty founder just schooled us all in how to keep bleached hair looking healthy.

It began with a “before” selfie that showed Drew looking rather unhappy. As she wrote in the comments, “When you get older, bleach is hard on the hair. wanted to lighten up! But what happened was my hair just didn’t respond well this time.” She went on to write that her most recent round of lightening left her hair looking “dead.”

#beautyjunkieweek THE BEFORE … OK when you get older, bleach is hard on the hair! I wanted to lighten up! But what happened was my hair just didn’t respond well this time. A few months ago I lightened my hair and it just looked dead! I am was sad. Don’t i look sad? This picture is sad! I wanted to do something to feel more attractive to myself and it totally backfired. Sometimes when you try to improve yourself and your confidence, it can go wrong, and then you feel worse. Haven’t we all had a haircut or a bad eyebrow tweeze or bad hair color and you just want to run home and get in your time machine and have a do over. We know it will just take a little time before things slip back into the comfort zone, but there is also action you can take! So, watch out for how I took charge and got my solution from @traceycunningham1. As she always saves the day.

It was a frustrating experience for Drew, who wrote, “I wanted to do something to feel more attractive to myself and it totally backfired. Sometimes when you try to improve yourself and your confidence, it can go wrong, and then you feel worse.” But rather than mope, Drew reminded us all that “it will just take a little time before things slip back into the comfort zone.” Until then, Drew shared that she relies on one cult-favorite product to save her bleached look.

With the help of celebrity hairstylist Tracey Cunningham, Drew turned to Olaplex, a salon-grade product that relinks broken bonds in your hair to strengthen everything. While some people mistake Olaplex for a conditioner, it’s actually a preshower treatment that should sit in your hair for 20 minutes before you shower and do your normal rinsing routine. (A word to the wise: if you want to pick up a bottle for yourself, purchase it directly from your favorite colorist — not Amazon — as fakes are floating around ecommerce sites like crazy.)

According to Drew, Olaplex has left her mane “bouncing and looking like hair rather than coughed up bird feathers.” Truly a universal desire.
