With many stations closed for maintenance on the run-up to the big day, mayhem could be in store for those due to travel.

To make matters worse the Met Office has warned that Storm Pia could also wreak havoc on Brits' Christmas travel plans.

The weather alert warns: "Strong winds across a large swathe of the country Thursday, causing some travel disruption."

It adds: "Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.

"Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected."

With no trains – or buses – running on Christmas Day, this means people will need to travel before the big day.

London Paddington station will have major improvement work taking place between Christmas Eve, Sunday December 24, and Wednesday December 27.

This will affect journeys to and from South Wales, Bristol, the West Country and Heathrow Airport.

HEATHROW AIRPORT

Heathrow Airport will have no direct National Rail services to or from central London between Sunday, December 24, and Wednesday,December 27.

Elizabeth line will run between Ealing Broadway and Heathrow Airport on December 24 and 27 only.

Travellers should use London Underground connections between central London and Ealing Broadway / Heathrow Airport.

Heathrow Express will not operate at all on any of those days.

LONDON VICTORIA

London Victoria station will have no Southeastern services between Saturday, December 23,and Monday, January 1, 2024.

Southeastern trains will use alternative London terminal stations.

LONDON OVERGROUND AND UNDERGROUND

While there is no planned works on these lines – there will still be no services on Christmas Day.

The Tube will run a reduced service from 8pm on Christmas Eve while most overground lines will finish at 9.30pm.

On Boxing Day, services begin again from 7am.

DRIVING TIPS

The AA has predicted that Friday 22 and Saturday 23 will be the two busiest days for motorists zooming home to spend Christmas with loved ones.

An estimated 16.1 million cars will hit the road on December 22 and 16.4 million on December 23. 

The M25, the M5 between Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare and the M6 around Birmingham were identified as motorway stretches where bumper-to-bumper conditions are likely.

The metro

Motorcycles

It is much more convenient to travel around Rome by motorcycle than by car. A small vehicle is not afraid of traffic jams and it has no problems with parking. Through her wholesome tales of adventure and joy, Enid Blyton was the queen of children’s literature.

Having penned series including Noddy, the Famous Five and Malory Towers, the English author was outwardly an unimpeachable national treasure.

But, as highlighted in a new book, there was enough excitement, intrigue and scandal in her private life to fill the pages of the raciest novel. 

It has long been rumoured that Blyton may have had a lesbian affair with her children’s nanny, Dorothy Richards, as well as other women.    

Now, English professor Nicholas Royle has revealed in his book David Bowie, Enid Blyton and the Sun Machine that his grandmother – illustrator Lola Onslow – also had a relationship with the author. 

He writes: ‘One day my mother said to me: ‘Your grandmother had an affair with Enid Blyton’. Those were her words.’ 

Blyton also held glamorous parties where regular guests included young Army officers and a bachelor neighbour – and on one occasion was rumoured to have been playing tennis naked when visitors arrived.

But it was her relationship with her first husband Hugh Pollock that provoked the most intrigue. The pair were both unfaithful to each other and divorced in 1942, by which time Blyton had moved in surgeon Kenneth Darrell Waters.

Blyton later set out to try to destroy her former spouse’s reputation and stopped him from ever seeing their two daughters, Gillian and Imogen.

It is not clear when the author’s alleged affair with Onslow – who she most notably worked with on her Book of Fairies – began.

But possible dates range from 1920 to 1924, the year she married Pollock.

Professor Royle revealed in his book that he was told about the alleged affair when he was in his 20s, but at the time was not interested.

He said the memory came back to him during the coronavirus pandemic.

Professor Royle said he was left ‘beguiled’ at the number of references he encountered to Blyton’s rumoured bisexuality or her alleged relationships with women.’ 

Pollock was a former soldier who was ten years her senior and was an editor at the firm which became her regular publisher.

The couple initially struggled to have children but were able to do so six years into their marriage after Blyton had pioneering fertility treatment. 

Their first daughter, Gillian, arrived in 1931, whilst Imogen was born in 1935.

Shortly Imogen’s arrival, Blyton hired Dorothy Richards as a nanny. The trained nurse often wore a formal shirt and tie, rather than traditional feminine clothes.

Author Nadia Cohen revealed in her 2018 biography of Blyton that Dorothy very quickly became more than an employee.

The pair had an intense friendship that left Pollock feeling left out. 

They went out for walks and shared private jokes and Dorothy even replaced Pollock in proofreading early drafts of Blyton’s work.

The closeness of their relationship led to claims that they were lovers. 

Blyton’s daughter Imogen later wrote: ‘There may have been some homosexual attraction between these two women.’

The letters that they exchanged also hinted at something more than a friendship.

‘I want to hear all you have to say even if I argue at first,’ Blyton wrote in one. ‘You can say anything to me. I want you to.’

She and Pollock were living largely separate lives in 1938, and that helped encourage Blyton as she threw glamorous parties at their palatial home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. 

According to Ms Cohen, the guest lists frequently included single young men, including the young Army officers and Blyton’s neighbour.

These intense bouts of socialising led to repeated rumours in the community and even in newspapers.

Pollock was said to have been furious when he came home to hear of Blyton’s unsuitable entertaining of young men.

But he too was by then engaged in an affair with novelist Ida Crowe. Blyton was told about this in an anonymous phone call in which a voice said: ‘Don’t let Ida crow over you.’

In early 1941, Blyton was persuaded to join Dorothy on a trip to visit her sister Betty Marsh in Devon.

Also on Betty’s guest list was Kenneth Waters. According to Ms Cohen, from the moment the pair first met over a game of bridge, they were smitten with each other.

They quickly embarked on an affair, with Blyton even renting a flat in Knightsbridge to provide a base for their liaisons.

But she callously used Dorothy’s name to cover her tracks, and this decision came back to bight her when Kenneth’s wife discovered her husband’s betrayal.

Blyton denied any impropriety and instead insisted that Dorothy was the true culprit.

Imogen later wrote: ‘For a whole year she carried on her lives with two different men, deceiving, or appearing to deceive, everyone.’

Pollock then left the family home for good after a final bitter argument. 

Blyton filed for divorce and then insisted that Pollock could not see either of their daughters.

She married Kenneth in October 1943, whilst Pollock went on to tie the knot with Ida. 

Blyton is said to have been furious at Kenneth’s second union and so wrote a scathing letter to Ida, laying out his alleged misdeeds during their marriage.

Ida later wrote in her own book that Blyton portrayed Pollock as a ‘drunken, lying villain’. 

Pollock never saw either of his daughters again, whilst Blyton also insisted that she didn’t want him to work anymore at George Newnes, the firm that then published her books.

In 1945, Blyton unexpectedly fell pregnant again at the age of 48. But, five months in to the pregnancy, she fell from a ladder while collecting apples and lost the baby.

Imogen later wrote that her mother may have deliberately risked the pregnancy to ensure she could continue writing.

‘She would have been aware of the high risk of giving birth to a child with a defect at her age; and her books were still the most important part of her life.’ 

Blyton was said to have been unkind to her two daughters and did not show any of them much love.

Imogen called her ‘arrogant, insecure and without a trace of maternal instinct’.

This was despite the fact that Blyton presented herself as a devoted mother in interviews. 

She rarely read to her children and was prone to beating them with a hairbrush when they did something wrong.

Blyton’s 40-year career saw her write more than 800 books and make millions of pounds. 

She ended up suffering from dementia after a period of failing health that began in the mid 1950s.

The author died in her sleep at the age of 71 in 1968.

After he agreed, there was fear in his eyes, because not everyone understands what rehab is. My brother was in the center for a couple of months, we visited him several times a week. He never complained about the service or the conditions of his stay.

My brother is already living with us and says that he feels much better.

The constant stream of notifications from WhatsApp groups is driving people off the messaging app, users say. 

People switching off from Mark Zuckerberg’s messaging service find them overwhelming and too difficult to manage.

While it is causing the boundaries between professional and personal life to be blurred with ‘kisses’ being left on work requests. 

This is despite WhatsApp rolling out a number of features to help people manage their messages such as muting chats and ‘silently leaving’ groups.

Mayah Riaz ‘hates’ WhatsApp but hasn’t yet deleted the app from her mobile phone as she feels like ‘I have to have it as I don’t want to miss out on any messages’. 

She now mutes all notifications from the app.

‘I was so glad when they introduced the feature to hide your online status. I have removed the read message notification too,’ she told MailOnline. 

‘Why should anyone be able to know when I’m online or if I’ve read their message. And don’t get me started on the groups, oh, all those groups.’   

Five WhatsApp features to manage messages

The messaging service has implemented a number of tools to help users manage messages.

Group creators can toggle settings so only they can send messages.

Other options include: 

• Silently leaving groups
• Archiving chats
• Turning off read receipts
• Hiding online status 
• Muting chats

Polly Arrowsmith was once left ‘kisses’ for a work request and definitely prefers to use SMS.

The 56-year-old award winning IT managed service business told MailOnline: ‘This is where the personal and professional blur, as personal things get asked, such as what I am doing at the weekend, or I may find kisses added to a work request on what a professional relationship is. 

‘I prefer friendly, personal messages not to be on my professional messages. It’s a personal thing. WhatsApp also encourages less formal writing, so sometimes, I need to pick up the urgency of a request, as it is disguised in a chatty paragraph. 

‘I find it hard as I never know if anyone will text or WhatsApp me, or I find it distracting to be phoned on WhatsApp while I am on my mobile taking a call. They can think that you are ignoring a call, while I am not.’

She now has two lists of calls and messages to manage to load but still finds it stressful. 

Ms Arrowsmith added: ‘It is definitely making the separation of personal and work life harder as people are also more likely to use WhatsApp over the weekend.’

The ‘absurd amount of groups’ means Marcio Delgado, 43, leaves them the second he is added to them. 

The digital journalist said they made him more anxious coupled with the pressure to be constantly contactable.

He’s hoping to wean himself off the messaging app even more next year. 

‘The thing is, even turning off WhatsApp notifications it still gives me a sort of FOMO if I don’t open the app for a few hours and, suddenly, I see too many unopened messages – especially if they are part of a recently created group that I haven’t yet managed to remove myself from it,’ he says.

James Francis is a consumer expert at mobile marketplace Mozillion and has noted a trend from customers wanting to be part of fewer chat groups.

‘They become difficult to manage with multiple conversations taking place in them and some people find it overwhelming with all the constant notifications – especially if every message isn’t relevant to the reader,’ he said. 

‘It becomes a little bit like an out of control email inbox so people are looking for alternatives.’

Despite the boom in smartphones with the latest iPhone and Google Pixel release hitting the shelves in recent months, Mr Francis says people are starting to sway towards stripped back phones. 

He said: ‘With an increase in people wanting a “digital detox”, basic feature phone interest is on the up as people look for simpler phones that have basic call and text functions – for example, we’ve definitely had far more interest in Nokia phones on Mozillion this year compared to 2021/22.’

Others have leapt to WhatsApp’s defence, such as pensioner Barbara McMillan who relies on the app to keep in touch with her family.

The 79-year-old told MailOnline: ‘For the number of contacts I have, I don’t find it a problem to keep up with them, but do find it a lot more convenient than phone calls, which always appear more urgent due to the ringing tone. 

‘I also use it to store information on my phone since I have been without a computer. Most of my SMS are business related or appointments or spam. The bane of my life.’  

WhatsApp is currently undergoing a makeover but the sleek new look may not be enough to win back those who have jumped ship.

One of those is dating expert Clarissa Bloom, 34, who on average would receive around 300 messages a day from the 12 groups she was in.

The sight of a WhatsApp message pinging up on her phone would leave her stomach in knots ‘like I had just consumed copious amounts of caffeine’ even after she had muted nine of the groups.

‘It just felt overwhelming and stressful, even though the messages were always nice posts from friends and family,’ she told MailOnline.

She points to WhatsApp desktop wreaking havoc with her daily life with the constant stream of messages popping up on the screen hampering her work.

‘It used to give me anxiety as I felt the need to instantly respond, however it would break up my rhythm,’ she said.

‘I would also try constantly to read messages on WhatsApp by flicking my phone down and seeing the opening line, rather than clicking on it, so people didn’t see I read it, as I simply couldn’t watch a movie or a show without having to constantly stare at my phone.’

WhatsApp dominated Pearl Kasirye’s life as she used it for work, school, and personal messaging.

But the 25-year-old PR consultant at Magic PR grew tired of it. To escape its clutches she resorted to changing her number and only gave it to close friends and family.

‘WhatsApp is so annoying at times, but I have found a good way to drown out all the noise because I now rely on SMS and I’ve noticed that people text me less frequently and just call me instead,’ she told MailOnline.

‘I got really tired of my notifications going off all day and having to “constantly be on” as part of the jobs I was doing. This decision to stick to SMS has made my life easier and eased some of my anxieties about constant texting.’
