A Place In The Sun forced to halt filming over house buyer’s ‘sobbing’, says Scarlette

A Place in the Sun: Buyer gets emotional over late husband

Scarlette Douglas, who is best known for presenting A Place In The Sun, made her Channel 4 debut in 2015. The small-screen star has witnessed her fair share of emotional moments on the programme with buyers searching for their perfect location abroad.

Scarlette spoke candidly about buyer Maureen whose husband had died just months before the pair went in search of their dream property in the town of Mojacar on the Costa Algeria, Spain after holidaying there for nearly 30 years.

The property expert recalled the heartbreaking moment the cameras were forced to stop filming following the house hunter’s “emotional” breakdown.

Scarlette revealed: “I was filming in Mojacar and Maureen explained she had lost her husband six months prior.

“It was always their dream to move abroad and buy their dream home.

“Every house we went to [Maureen] just got so emotional because she always thought she’d be looking at properties with her husband.”

After the death of her husband, the buyer decided it was the right time to retire to Mojacar permanently.

Maureen brought brother-in-law Dave along for advice and revealed he would help her make a practical choice but things took an emotional turn.

“We had to stop the cameras at one point because she was just sobbing,” Scarlette recalled. “Like, she was really sobbing.”

The television host went on to explain the importance of A Place In The Sun for house hunters and viewers alike.

Scarlette commented: “That’s when we realised that you’re not just doing a job. You’re not just at work. You’re actually helping people.

“You could potentially be changing someone’s life.”

Following the house hunter’s tearful moment, Scarlette recalled the buyer deciding to remain in the UK for the time being.

The Channel 4 presenter commented: “By the end of it the [Maureen] said ‘I can’t do it. It’s too soon to completely move away from my family. I still need that support bubble.’

Scarlette added: “Being with someone for 50 years or more and you’re trying to live the dream you both agreed to live together.

“It’s hard when that person is not here anymore.”

Scarlette has been a regular face on A Place In The Sun for the past five years and the presenter credited I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly for helping her achieve her television dream.

After appearing in a vast array of stage performances including the X Factor West End musical, she later took part in Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and joined the duo as a dancer on their UK arena tour.

Scarlette went on to interview the TV personalities before securing a role in A Place In The Sun.

“It was their management that gave me a lot of advice and tips,” the holiday property expert explained.

“I did my screen test and about 10 days after that I found out that I got the job on A Place In The Sun.”

A Place In The Sun airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 3pm.
