‘I wasn’t prepared for this’: Amanda Byram, 48, gives candid insight into breastfeeding her newborn son Phoenix and reveals it has made her want to ‘scream and cry’

She surprised her fans last month with the news that she had welcomed a baby boy called Phoenix Blaze.

And Amanda Byram has given a candid insight into breastfeeding her four-week-old son, saying it has left her with ‘nipple pain’ and wanting to ‘scream and cry’.

The Irish television presenter, 48, took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a photograph of herself breastfeeding Phoenix, who she shares with her husband Julian Okines.

She gave a warm smile to the camera as her blonde tresses fell across her shoulders in a straight fashion while her newborn baby lay curled up across her chest in a blanket.

Alongside the picture, Amanda revealed that she has found breastfeeding difficult and ‘fiddly’ and said it has left her with ‘nipple pain’.

She said she wanted to share her experience so other new mothers did not feel the same ‘pressure’ she felt to ‘get it right’ immediately.

Amanda said she has been through ‘painful night feeds’ which have left her wanting to ‘scream and cry’ and said she was not prepared for the process of breastfeeding.

In a lengthy caption, she wrote: ‘My nipples have gone to war and it’s tough in the trenches…

‘You’d think after millions of years of evolution breastfeeding would be easy. Maybe for some it is but I’ve found it to be really fiddly. So many differing techniques to learn and heaps of pressure to get it right.

‘It’s like doing the Strictly final where both of you are still learning to dance. Only difference is on Strictly when you get it wrong they don’t tweak your nipples raw until you want to scream and cry at 4am!!!

‘I wanted to write this post for any other mamas out there going through the same thing. I wasn’t prepared for this, and so much pressure is put on us to get it right off the bat. 

‘So please know you’re not alone, I’m with you in those painful night feeds, and I feel your cracked nipple pain, endless hot baths, and swollen, bruised Montgomery’s.’

Amanda went on to say that she is beginning to find breastfeeding easier, adding that it is ‘the most special feeling’ when they manage to ‘get it right’.

She continued: ‘I’m getting there now… still tender and some days are better than others but Phoenix is gaining lots of weight and is happy and healthy which is my driving force. 

‘I hope I can keep going because when we get it right it is the most special feeling.

‘Remember, however you feed, your baby needs YOU to be happy, that’s all that really matters in the end. Everyone’s journey is different and is equally special 

‘Shout out to all the ladies who have given me the mental strength to power through and my amazing Mum and my sister Natasha.’

It comes after Amanda shared adorable images enjoying a winter walk with her three-week-old baby boy Phoenix Blaze on Sunday.

Cosy: Amanda and baby Phoenix looked ready for a walk by the beach as they wrapped up warm for the winter weather 

The Total Wipeout presenter looked ready for her seaside stroll in a pair of black leggings and matching polo neck jumper. 

She threw on a cream full length cardigan to keep the chill at bay and  finished the casual look with a pair of on-trend white and leopard print trainers. 

Amanda went make-up free in the pictures and allowed her shoulder length highlighted tresses to fall loosely over he shoulders. 

The presenter made sure baby Phoenix, who arrived earlier this month, was kept warm from the winter chill by keeping him close to her chest in a fluffy all-in-one and artipoppe baby carrier.

Friends of the star’s quickly flocked to her page to comment on the adorable images.

Presenter Denise Van Outen posted a heart and lovestruck eyes emoji and wrote: ‘Still makes me cry, BEST NEWS EVER.’

Gaby Roslin added ‘you gorgeous souls, love you so dearly’ followed by a series of love heart emoji 

Presenter Alexandra Maurer penned: ‘sooooo happy to see these beautiful pictures. Merry Christmas to you three’.  

The adorable images come after Amanda revealed that her fertility journey had been ‘long’ and her journey involved ‘the heartbreak of hope that turned to hopelessness’ and ‘elation that turned to devastation.’

She explained in a post: ‘I know many brave parents-in-waiting who, like us, have struggled for a long time, so today we share this magical news in the hope it can inspire and offer a light at the end of the tunnel. You are powerful warriors.

The presenter continued: ‘I know your pain, and I see you. We send you all the strength you need to tackle your journeys.’  

Amanda said that now her son, who she shares with husband Julian, is ‘finally here,’ they realise that they have ‘never been more ready’ to be his parents.

Addressing her husband, she added: ‘My heart bursts with love for you [Julian]. You have been my solid rock over these years, encouraging me to hang in and keep going. 

‘After every tear, every tumble, every heartache, your positivity made everything seem possible again.’

‘It’s thanks to you, your energy, and your enthusiasm, that we are all here together today.’

‘We are so lucky to have you, and Phoenix is lucky to call you his Daddy, I know you are already his hero. We love you infinitely.’
