Angelina Jolie and Daughter Zahara Share a Rare Red Carpet Moment at Varietys Power of Women Summit
Angelina Jolie continues to celebrate strong women—and her daughter, Zahara, is here to watch.
On Thursday evening, Jolie and daughter Zahara arrived together at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills for Variety‘s Power of Women, the magazine’s annual summit honoring a select group of philanthropic women whose work has significantly impacted media and entertainment. This year, Jolie served as presenter for the summit’s honorees, which included Amanda Gorman, Katy Perry, Lorde, and Rita Moreno.
At the event’s red carpet, Jolie posed in a flowing tan long-sleeve gown beside Zahara, who wore an all-white sweater, loose pants, and oversized belt. The mother-daughter duo were later accompanied on the carpet by Gorman, who posed with them in a bright pink Versace dress paired with Vram jewelry.
During the ceremony, Jolie gave a speech praising Gorman’s work and commending the National Youth Poet Laureate and Harvard alum for using the power of her voice. “The young woman of grace, who stepped fearlessly to the podium on Inauguration Day,” said Jolie. “Not just the youngest but the strongest voice we could ask for in that moment.”
“There is nothing more beautiful, more challenging and more unsettling perhaps than the free mind of the thinking woman,” she continued. “Those who have the power of free speech—the weapon of free speech—must combine to defend those who do not. We need voices like Amanda’s, those lights in the dark … Amanda, may you burn fiercely and light the way for others.”
Jolie has been an outspoken advocate of human rights. Two weeks ago, she made a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with athlete-gymnasts McKayla Maroney and Aly Raisman following that Wednesday’s Senate hearing, during which they testified against the FBI handling of an assault investigation of former USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. She praised their bravery in coming forward.
“I was honored to meet with some of the brave US gymnasts who appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday,” Jolie wrote of the visit on Instagram. “I’m in awe of their courage and commitment to preventing future failures to investigate abuse.”
Zahara, the third of Jolie’s six children, maintains a close relationship to her mother. Jolie recently shared a sweet photo on Instagram of Zahara reading Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. “End of #summerreading,” she captioned the post. “These are some of the favorites in our house. Would love to know yours.”
