Ariana Grande’s Reaction to Billie Eilish Beating Her at the Grammys Is So Pure

Three years after Adele won the Grammy for Album of the Year and declared that the victory belonged to Beyoncé, Billie Eilish did the same for Ariana Grande.

The “Bad Guy” singer swept the four biggest categories at last night’s Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for her 2019 release, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? She trumped fellow nominees Ariana Grande, Lil Nas X, H.E.R., Lana Del Rey, Vampire Weekend, Lizzo, and Bon Iver for the title. And although she showed her gratitude for the victory, 18-year-old Eilish expressed that Grande deserved to win instead.

“Can I just say that I think Ariana deserves this,” she said at the beginning of her acceptance speech. “Thank U, Next got me through some shit. And I think it deserves more than anything in the world. I love you so much.”

The camera then panned to Grande, who was seen swatting away Eilish’s compliments and mouthing “No, no, no” from her seat, encouraging the young pop star to embrace her triumph. She seemed to call out “Take your moment, girl!” and blew the singer a kiss, showing that she had no hard feelings about the loss.

Amid the Twitter debates over who should’ve won the award (supporters of Grande and Lana Del Rey argued that the artists were robbed), the moment between Grande and Eilish was a refreshing show of solidarity. Fans appreciated both Eilish’s humility and Grande’s encouragement.

Grande, who performed a medley of her hits during the ceremony, was nominated for five awards last night but went home empty-handed. She won her first Grammy last year, when her LP Sweetener was named Best Pop Vocal Album.
