Wow: Bob Mortimer revealed on Thursday that he grew up having hot drinks with 16 sugars and will only say ‘no more’ on his deathbed, despite reducing his intake to six teaspoons per cup

‘When I was young, I used to put in 16 sugars. I promise, I did,’ he said, reported The Sun.

‘The slightly amusing thing about that story is that if I put 17 in it was too sweet for me.

‘My dad died in a car crash and I think I started taking all these sugars then, because it is mood altering. That might be the link. Maybe on my deathbed, they will pour me a tea and I will say, “No sugar”’.

The comedian had a triple bypass heart operation in 2015 when his heart was stopped for 32 minutes after doctors discovered that 95 per cent of his arteries were blocked.

He was forced to cancel the first leg of his comedy tour with partner Vic Reeves to recuperate at the time.

Bob and Vic, 62, were due to start their 25 Years Of Reeves And Mortimer: The Poignant Moments tour in Glasgow.

A spokesman for Bob said at the time: ‘Bob would like to thank his consultant and all the nursing staff at the hospital for looking after him so well.

‘He now needs several weeks to fully recover, so unfortunately the first leg of the UK tour will be cancelled.’

Bob previously revealed he struggles with pain from rheumatoid arthritis, a condition from which his mother Eunice also suffers from.

In an interview back in 2002, Bob told the Radio Times how he used steroids to keep it under control when preparing for a show.

He said: ‘I have to be careful because I have rheumatoid arthritis all over my body. Steroids keep it under control, it’s treatable, but not curable, and it flares up with a major attack every now and then.

‘Whenever I do a show, there’s a price to pay. I’ve recently started to suffer from iritis, which is when it attacks the iris of the eye. It was absolute agony, but I’m not going to give in to it.’
