Bridgerton fans are left surprised as they discover Nicola Coughlan’s real age

Netflix’s latest release, the period drama Bridgerton, has had fans hooked with its mix of romance and scandal centering around one particularly wealthy family in London in the early 1800s.

With its stellar casting, beautiful sets and intense drama, it’s no wonder that people have been bingeing the show. But taking to Twitter, some fans have revealed their shock over one actor's real age.

Nicola Coughlan, who became famous for her brilliant performance in Channel Four’s Derry Girls, portrays teenager Penelope Featherington. The youngest of the Featherington family, Penelope joins protagonist Daphne Bridgerton as the two young women enter society for the first time.

The drama of the show is based around the young debutante’s first season at court, where the young women and their families are all keen to secure them a husband.

Nicola’s performance of shy Penelope has been praised by fans, but they were surprised to find out the actress is actually in her thirties, as Nicola turned 34 earlier this month.

One fan wrote: “Nicola Coughlan and Jon Ossoff are the same age. That’s it, that’s the tweet.”

Another added: “I just found out that Nicola Coughlan is basically my age but looks 16 and it is MESSING with me. Like, how??? Witchcraft?”

And another fan said: “nicola coughlan aka penelope featherington is 34 years old???? im crying.”

The show has turned out to be super popular since its release late last month, with the series now sporting a 93 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix also predicted that the series would reach 63 million households with 28 days of its debut, which took place on Christmas Day.

Another of the show’s stand out characters is Daphne Bridgerton, who forms an alliance with the handsome Duke of Hastings. Daphne is played by 25 year old actress Phoebe Dynevor, from Manchester.

She is the daughter of Sally Dynevor, who is known for her role as Sally Webster on Coronation Street.

Her father Tim is a screenwriter, so it seems dramatics run in the family.

In an interview with Glamour, she revealed: "The Bridgerton family are a really, super-tight-knit family and I have the same thing at home.

“I’m really close to my parents and my family—they have shaped me every way they could; they've been such an amazing support system."

Despite being so young, Phoebe already seems to be somewhat of a British TV veteran, having starred in acclaimed series Waterloo Road as Siobhan Mailey at just 14.

She has also featured in Prisoners’ Wives and Dickensian among others.
