Reflecting on the annual ceremony’s achievement in recognizing the bravery of ordinary people, Carol admitted it was essential to remember the recipients of its most significant awards.

‘It’s important we reflect back on those 20 years and also those winners,’ she told viewers. ‘They’re all tremendous, and yet some of them have passed away since then, and some of those Children Of Courage are no longer with us.

‘It’s very important to us, people love it because there’s something in these winners that touch us deeply.’

‘Every decade has its ups and downs, my 50s included, but there’s the phrase, “You make your mistakes faster.” I now know who I want to be around and what I want to do.

”My life is so enriched by that because I waste less time on things I don’t want to be doing.’
