Chris Coleman could be handed Sunderland escape route

Chris Coleman is set to be given an escape route from Sunderland by Championship club Ipswich.

His future is in doubt at the Stadium of Light after the club were relegated to League One on Saturday.

Coleman admits he has never spoken to owner Ellis Short and has no idea what the club’s financial plan is to mount a comeback next season.

The former Wales boss is of the stature that Town are looking for.

Coleman will need backing with cash to rebuild Sunderland or he could be lured south.

The Tractor Boys had been keen to speak to former defender Tony Mowbray about their managerial vacancy.

But after guiding Blackburn to League One promotion on Tuesday, he has rebuffed Ipswich’s interest.

And ex-Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, currently in charge of Belgian second tier side OH Leuven, has also done the same while they have been priced out of a move for Luton’s League Two promotion-winning boss Nathan Jones.

Will Sunderland return to the Premier League in the next five years?
