Chris Evans urges Kevin McCloud to stop using ‘labourers’ term in epic Virgin Radio rant

Chris Evans tells Kevin McCloud to stop saying ‘labourer’

Chris Evans, 54, revealed he’s a fan of Grand Designs, the show which does pretty much what it says on the tin. But the Virgin Radio host had one little suggestion for presenter and designer Kevin McCloud, and that was to use another name for the talented architects that envision their own dream homes and make them a reality.

Kevin on Grand Designs – you’ve got to stop referring to unbelievablyhighly-skilled people as labourers!

On Monday’s show, Chris and his co-star Vassos Alexander discussed last week’s episode of the Channel 4 hit program, where viewers met energy conservationist Andrew and his wife.

Andrew had plans to build a radical, self-heating home by storing the warmth of the summer sun into insulated earth banks, and planned to do it all under £320,000.

But it wasn’t his Art Deco, Palm Springs style thermal experiment that caught Chris’ eye at first.

Instead, he encouraged Kevin to adopt another term when he referred to participants on the show.

Amid his chat with Vassos, Chris directed his attention to the presenter.

“Kevin on Grand Designs – you’ve got to stop referring to unbelievably highly-skilled people as labourers!” he exclaimed.

Vassos laughed as Chris gushed over Andrew’s project.

“Did you see the last one? Where the guy digs a hole in his garden and buries a house?” Chris asked his co-star.

“And will heat it for free forever, and does it all for £310,000 – the whole house!”

The more Chris spoke about it, the more gobsmacked he became as he relived watching the conservationist build his dream five bed dwelling, equipped with cinema room in Buckinghamshire.

“When he said, ‘I think we can do it for £300,000’, Kevin nearly choked,” the host laughed.

“And he only went £10,000 over budget!”

While he was getting excited over one TV show, his co-stars were left in shock over another, after Chris admitted he doesn’t understand or watch The Masked Singer.

The crazy talent contest has become a worldwide phenomenon, with TV’s wildest guessing game now being produced in various countries across the globe, but Chris found it difficult to get his head around the concept.

Season two of the singing competition kicked off on Boxing Day, with viewers excited to see what whacky costumes the designers would come up with this time.

The star-studded panel includes Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora and Davina McCall, along with new recruit Mo Gilligan taking the place of Hollywood actor Ken Jeong and Joel Dommett returned to his hosting studies.

Speaking to Vassos last week, Chris was upset that Sophie Ellis-Bextor was booted out early on in the show, admitting he believes she’s one of “the best singers” in the world: “So having never seen The Masked Singer, I’m suddenly wanting to,” he said.

“I understand Sophie Ellis-Bextor was on it and now isn’t – so people do leave each week.

“It’s just that it’s not to do with the revealing of who’s under the costume, that’s a different reason,” he wondered out loud as Vassos tried to explain the rules to him.

But he didn’t seem convinced with the rulings, after referring once again to the Murder on the Dance Floor singer’s demise on the contest.

“But Sophie left quite early,” he noted.

“I know about this because I read about it, not watch it.

“But she is one of the best singers in the world…” he contemplated how, with her talent, she left the singing competiton first, leaving him to question everything.

The Chris Evans Breakfast Show airs weekdays at 6am on Virgin Radio.
