Chris Evans, 55, felt like he made a fool of himself in front of is old pal Elton John after he threw himself on the floor while worrying what to do. The cringeworthy encounter came during a charity gig that the singer was performing at, admitting it was “the most nervous I can remember being” as he had a break from performing over the Covid pandemic.
My mind was racing!
And as he spotted Chris backstage, he threw his arms open as if to give him a huge hug.
Demonstrating how he greeted him, Chris described: “I’m thinking, ‘I think he does want me to hug him!’
“But my mind is racing!”
The radio DJ went on to explain why he was so caught off-guard by a man he’s met countless times, as the organisation, timings and intricacies of the gig line-up seemed to cause quite a bit of stress.
“And my reaction to his arms wide open was, ‘I haven’t been PCR’d [Polymerase chain reaction test]!'” Chris exclaimed, as his co-stars Rachel Horne and Vassos Alexander burst out laughing.
The host recalled Elton being taken aback with confusion, admitting he probably threw him off completely, 30 seconds before he was due to perform.
Chris continued: “He said, ‘Excuse me?’
“But I repeat it, I say again, ‘I haven’t been PCR’d!'” And he’s thinking, ‘What are you telling me for? I haven’t got any on me!'”
PCR tests are used to directly screen for the presence of viral RNA, which will be detectable in the body before antibodies form or symptoms of the disease are present.
They can tell whether or not someone has the virus very early on after being sent away to a lab to diagnose.
But Chris’ little moment didn’t end there.
Appearing to cringe as he re-lived the awkward moment, the DJ went on: “And then I didn’t really know what to do – this is all happening in the space of a few seconds by the way.
“So, I end up putting my hands in the Namaste prayer position and I got down on one knee and I curtsied.”
His co-stars creased with laughter as he shook his head.
“Now I’ve been to his house, I’ve hung out with him,” Chris said, bewildered.
“I’ve even had lunch with him!”
The Chris Evans Breakfast Show airs weekdays at 6:30am on Virgin Radio.
