CMT Pledges Complete Parity Between Male And Female Artists

CMT has declared it will institute parity between male and female artists appearing on the country music channel.

“Effective immediately, all music video hours on CMT and CMT Music channels will have complete parity between male and female artists. That means 50/50,” CMT said on Twitter, as their #CMTEqualPlay initiative was launched.

From now on, female artists are guaranteed to account for half the videos played on CMT’s platforms. That’s an increase from the 40/60 (female/male) ratio previously used.

In country radio, female singers currently account for only 13 percent of airplay.

CMT said the artists are in full support of this initiative.

Singers such as Darius Rucker, Cassadee Pope, Brandi Carlile and Jake Owen took to social media displaying their solidarity.

“We, as the men of country music are ALL FOR ‘equal play,'” Owen wrote on Twitter. “I have many artists friends that are women and I have two little girls. Also, one of my fave artists is Kacey Musgraves. I even bought a sweatshirt at her show.”
