Dark comedy about life during the Troubles in Northern Ireland wins £50,000 Man Booker Prize

The Belfast born author Anna Burns has won the Man Booker Prize for her darkly comic novel about life during the Troubles, it was announced last night.

Milkman tells the story of a teenage girl’s disturbing encounters with an older man, who is a senior figure in a paramilitary organisation, and the insidious rumours that soon flow through her tense community. Miss Burns, 56, pictured, beat British writer Daisy Johnson, who at 27 was the youngest author ever to be shortlisted for the award, for her novel Everything Under, and American Richard Powers, who was the bookies’ favourite to win the £50,000 prize, for The Overstory.
