Are YOU doing it wrong? Dawn French reignites the age-old debate on how to correctly eat a scone as she delivers a passionate speech about the baked treat on The Project

She’s the hilarious British comedian who is known to have an opinion when it comes to certain types of food.

And on Wednesday, Dawn French, 63, delivered a passionate speech on The Project about the age-old debate on how to correctly eat a scone, when questioned on the topic by host Waleed Aly.

The Vicar of Dibley star shouted ‘there is no other way!’ as she revealed her controversial view on how to eat the baked goods – raging that only ‘idiots’ put cream on before jam.

Passion: On Wednesday, Dawn French, 63, delivered a passionate speech on The Project on the age-old debate on how to correctly eat a scone

She began: ‘You have a scone; it can be fruit, it can be plain. You can, if you like, have butter. That’s optional.

‘Then, you have the jam – and I don’t mind what kind of jam it is, it can be strawberry, raspberry, whatever you like.

‘Then you have the cream – the cream is the crown. Cornish, clotted cream.’

Are you doing it right? The great scone debate has baffled society for decades, with many wondering whether to put jam or cream on first

Convinced: Making a string of gestures with her hands, she added: ‘You want a dollop – the jam is spread, the cream is dolloped’

‘Some idiots decide they’ll put the cream on first, thinking that’s the dairy and the fat needs to go first. Who does that?’

She laughed: ‘Only foolish people. And people I no longer respect!’

Dawn previously shared her thoughts on the matter on Twitter, and even posted a picture of her perfected scone earlier in the year.

‘Plenty of upside down in our world right now, so here’s some right way up to usher you into the weekend,’ she wrote. ‘Feeling justifiably correct and a teeny bit smug.’

It was recently announced that Dawn would reprise her role in The Vicar of Dibley, as it’s set to return to screens this Christmas for a trio of specials.

She will return to play the titular vicar for the 10-minute episodes, as Geraldine Granger records a series of sermons for her parishioners while they are holed up at home during lockdown in England.

While The Vicar of Dibley originally aired from 1994 to 1998, the series returned for various specials before officially concluding in 2007, but has briefly headed back to screens for various shorts in aid of Comic Relief.

Throughout lockdown, Geraldine has been writing and delivering monthly sermons over Zoom, offering her musings on life, faith and of course chocolate.
