Duchess Camilla Is Going to Be "Queen Consort" When Charles Is King Instead of "Princess Consort"

The Queen is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee—aka 70 years on the throne!—and just opened up about her wishes when Prince Charles becomes king. And apparently first on the list is Duchess Camilla becoming Queen Consort.

It looks like Charles is very much aware of his mother’s wishes, because he and Camilla released a statement of their own, saying “On this historic day, my wife and I join you all in congratulating Her Majesty The Queen on the remarkable achievement of serving this nation, the Realms and Commonwealth for seventy years. The Queen’s devotion to the welfare of all her people inspires still greater admiration with each passing year. We are deeply conscious of the honor represented by my mother’s wish. As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.”

A source also tells People that Charles and Camilla were “touched and honored” by the Queen’s statement. And by the way, this marks a bit of a change in plans. Back when Charles and Camilla married in 2005, the couple issued a statement saying that Camilla planned to “use the title HRH the Princess Consort when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.” And in March 2020, reps for the couple told The Times that “The intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne. This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Guess things did change after all!
