Elizabeth Hurley claims she has LESS privacy than ROYALTY

Elizabeth Hurley claims she has LESS privacy than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as she insists celebrities have it harder than the British monarchy

Elizabeth Hurley admits she is envious of the modern day monarchy, because she believes they enjoy less press attention and a greater degree of privacy than her.

The British actress has long been courted by the paparazzi following her emergence as Hugh Grant’s little known girlfriend at the 1994 premiere of his breakthrough film, Four Weddings and a Funeral, in that Versace dress.

And Elizabeth, 54, says getting the opportunity to play a member of an admittedly fictional British monarchy in short-lived TV show The Royals has now asserted her belief that celebrities are subject to far more extreme levels of public scrutiny.

Opening up: Elizabeth Hurley admits she is envious of the modern day monarchy, because she believes they enjoy less press attention and greater degree of privacy than her

She told BuzzFeed News show AM to DM: ‘It made me feel a little jealous because it really made me realize that – on our show, you saw us out and about as royalty bestowing goodness and grace on the public, but then of course you went behind closed doors and saw what we were getting up to.’

‘The real Royal family, you never see them behind closed doors ever. We only ever see them bestowing nice things on the outside and you never see anything else, unlike people in show business where unfortunately pesky people seem to get behind the scenes all the time.

‘So actually they’re really lucky because I always think of the royal family being sort of like showbiz — really because it is — but with a lot more privacy. Sometimes. Maybe they’ve lost a little lately!’

Old times: Elizabeth says playing a member of an admittedly fictional British monarchy in TV show The Royals asserted her belief that celebrities are subject to far more extreme levels of public scrutiny

Her comments are likely to rattle Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, whose every movement has been dissected following her decision to give up a promising acting career and a prominent role on legal drama Suits to marry Prince Harry, sixth in line to the British throne.

But Elizabeth remains unrepentant in her belief that the extra layer of security that comes with being a member of the Royal family affords them far more privacy.

‘They still have the secret service looking after them, and they still have the Palace Guard, and there’s no cameras backstage… they still have a great deal more protection than people in showbiz,’ she said.

Let’s talk: The actress aired her opinions while talking to Zach Stafford on BuzzFeed’s AM To DM show in New York City

Fiery: Elizabeth played Queen Helena for 40 episodes between 2015 and 2018 in The Royals

‘But we are of an age where people who could have more privacy choose to be a little more open, and to reveal a little more than perhaps their predecessors did, and I guess that’s a choice.’

Elizabeth appeared as fiery Queen Helena for 40 episodes of The Royals between its 2015 launch and 2018, when it went off-air.

While it was universally panned by critics, the show won praise for its individual performances – among them Elizabeth, who was described as “fantastic in this role.”

The real deal: Her comments are likely to rattle Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, whose every movement has been dissected following her decision to give up a promising acting career and marry Prince Harry
