Everything David Spade Said About Kate Spade's Suicide and Relationship with Heather Locklear Today

The “Hotel Transylvania 3” star comments on death of his sister-in-law and troubled ex-girlfriend while appearing on radio and television Monday.

David Spade still keeps in contact with ex-girlfriend Heather Locklear and he told Andy Cohen he’s been checking in on her in light of her recent troubles with the law, because she was kind enough to check in with him after his sister-in-law, Kate Spade, committed suicide.

"I still do, yeah," Spade told Cohen when the Bravo personality asked if he checked in with his ex-girlfriend in wake of her recent arrest and hospital visit. "She checked in on me with Katie, like a lot of people did, and it was really nice. Katie was a sweetheart, too. I think Heather might’ve met her in the old days."

Last month, Locklear was arrested for misdemeanor battery against a police officer and an emergency personnel. Shortly after being released from police custody, she was rushed to the hospital where she was treated for an alleged overdose. The actress had previously been on a psychiatric hold after allegedly attacking both of her parents one week before her arrest.

"What can you do other than just say hello and check in and say, ‘If you ever wanna say hi or talk or anything, [I’m here],’" Spade said on Cohen’s SiriusXM radio show Wednesday morning.

"That’s what people did to me with Katie, and there’s something nice about [it]," he said. "It’s just sort of a friendly gesture… No one can do anything about what happened with Kate, but at least when people [reach out], you just feel like that’s some niceness coming in. Good vibes instead of what’s going on, which is obviously very tough."

"But you don’t wanna be condescending," he added. "And she’s having a tough situation. We all do. I mean, I have my down moments like everybody. I just go, ‘Shit, everyone’s literally one inch away from having some trouble sometimes.’"

Spade and Locklear dated in 2016, and the former was reportedly quite upset when the relationship ended.

"I mean, I love her," Spade said when Cohen initially brought Locklear up. "And she was nice to go out with me, and I will always be indebted to her. She was so nice, so fun, and no apologies went out with me, didn’t care. Even though I’m sure she took some grief."

During his "Good Morning America" appearance earlier in the day, Spade said he and his family were doing "as good as we can" in light of the suicide of his fashion designer sister-in-law.

"It’s been very tough, obviously," he said. "It is very sweet that everyone came out of the woodwork, that she really made an impact. I remember when we used to hang out. It’s funny — every girl I was with or anyone around that knew they would see Katie would dress differently. They would bring their A-game. It was very sweet."

"She was such a beautiful, lovely, great spirit that obviously will be missed. I’ll start balling [if I continue]," Spade concluded as he thanked his fans for their support.

The fashion designer was found dead in her New York apartment last month after committing suicide by hanging. She was 55.
