“Something happened and I just thought: ‘That's it really’ and I walked away and resigned.

“I was treated pretty poorly, actually. And after a while I just thought: ‘Sod it’.”

Fern also addressed rumours she left the series because of a feud between her and co-host Phillip Schofield.

She said: “There was also a persistent rumour that I left because Phillip was being paid more than me and I always say to people: ‘Why would I leave a show to go to nothing if I was worried about money?’”

But, in a recent interview with OK! magazine, Fern said she “loved” her time on This Morning.

Fern said: “I loved being on the show. Phillip [Schofield] and Holly [Willoughby] have been doing so well presenting it throughout everything.

“I still love tuning in. But you move on and never turn back. Just keep going, I say. I don’t miss it. It’s not my life any more.

“Having said that, if this crisis had happened during my time, I would have done the show every day come hell or high water. I would have slept in my dressing room. I had a fantastic time.”

Looking back on her time on the as a TV presenter, Fern said: “There have been so many amazing celebrity encounters over the years. Oh, I have stories! Dolly Parton stands out.

“She walks into a room and there’s a sparkle in the air. I did a long interview with her for the BBC once and I flew to Nashville to meet her.

“We spent two hours going through her wardrobe and she let me see her wigs. She even gave me the bracelet off her wrist because it matched the colour of my dress. She said to me, ‘It’s only a piece of glass’ but it was covered in rhinestones!”

Fern also opened up on her break up from her husband of 20 years Phil.

She confessed: “There’s no point in waiting for Prince Charming or the angels to make everything right. And actually I’m making it right for myself! I feel very liberated right now.

“Obviously things are painful and obviously things hurt. Nobody wants to have a relationship break down. But I’m okay.”
