France "an anti-football team" snaps Belgium star after World Cup semis loss

Thibaut Courtois has accused France of parking the bus in their World Cup semi-final win over Belgium.

Courtois’s Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard has also weighed in, insisting he preferred to lose in the attacking manner that his Belgian side did rather than to progress as France have done.

The Belgian players remain convinced that, but for a lapse in concentration which allowed Samuel Umtiti to score from a 51st minute corner, there was nothing between the two teams.

Courtois said: "I’d have preferred to lose to Brazil in the quarter-finals, at least that was a team that wanted to play football.

"France are just an anti-football team.

"I wouldn’t say that [Belgium] was better than us. They defended in their own half the entire time, we shouldn’t have been surprised, they’ve done that all tournament. It’s a shame.”

Hazard added: “I prefer to lose with this Belgium than win with that France”.

Their captain, Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany added: “We are disappointed. It was a game with very little between the teams.

“If it wasn’t for a set-piece, it was hard to see which team was going to get a breakthrough. It makes it harder because you lose a game that could have swayed one way or the other. We have to pick ourselves up.”

Kompany’s Blues team-mate, Kevin De Bruyne, has insisted he and his team-mates could be proud of the manner in which they went out.

He also dismissed talk that the country’s supposed Golden Generation had failed.

“Bah! Generations, who talks about generations?” he said. "We are a small country. We can be very happy and lucky that we can have a team like we have.

"We don’t have the resources, the infrastructure, the money that other countries have. What we have is a really good team who have performed really well."
