France captain Lloris responds to those Mbappe-Messi comparisons

France captain Hugo Lloris knows the comparisons between Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi are inevitable — but he wants the teenage sensation to earn them.

The Tottenham and Les Bleus keeper is certain that after making his mark on this World Cup with a one-man demolition of Messi’s Argentina on Saturday, the teenage Paris Saint-Germain forward will eventually join football’s elite.

Mbappe, 19, scored twice and won the penalty from which Antoine Griezmann gave France an early lead in the 4-3 win on Saturday that took Didier Deschamps’ young team to a quarter-final meeting with Uruguay.

It means 31-year-old Messi goes home from yet another tournament as an also-ran.

But Lloris said: “We can’t compare Kylian to Messi. Messi is unique. Messi is Messi – and it is impossible to compare anyone to him. But what I can say is that Kylian has this huge potential and hopefully he will reach the highest level.

“He has got the right mentality to get to the top level. With a lot of work I have no doubt he will reach the elite.

“We are in a World Cup, and this is the best place for Kylian to show himself to all the world.

“We know in France and in the rest of Europe that this a player with big, big potential. Against Argentina he has put his stamp on this World Cup and that’s important for him and his confidence.

“It is also important for the team, because we know we can trust him in important moments.”

Lloris added: “Kylian now has to take things step by step. I have the same problem at Tottenham, when I talk about young players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

“They all have huge potential and I hope for Kylian that he will one day get the rewards that his talent can bring.

“I am not surprised what Kylian did against Argentina. I see it every day in training. His main quality is his speed. He reads the game well, but his natural strength is his speed.

“He is so fast, but he is also very agile with the ball and if he has space he can kill teams.”
