Gareth Southgate hands shock first England call-up to Premier League defender
Gareth Southgate has called up Brighton centre-back Lewis Dunk after England were hit with a string of injury worries.
Fellow defender James Tarkowski, of Burnley , has been ruled out of next week’s Nations League double header with Croatia and Spain.
Manchester United ’s Luke Shaw and Danny Rose of Tottenham are also both concerns, with Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell in line for a call-up if either one has to withdraw.
Boss Southgate will make further checks on Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy who has been nursing a hamstring injury.
He was rewarded Dunk, 26, for his impressive form ahead of Wolves captain Conor Coady, who is also on the radar.
Brighton boss Chris Hughton said: “We are absolutely thrilled for Lewis. He fully deserves this call-up. He has shown his quality in the Premier League and his progression has been a steady and consistent one.
“He has improved with every season and, on the back of an impressive first season in the Premier League, he continues to progress. I’m delighted he has now been given recognition at international level.”

Rose and Shaw are both likely to report at St George’s Park.
They will be looked at by the FA’s medics, who will decide whether they will travel to Croatia for the game on Friday, with game away to Spain following Monday.
Rose has been nursing a groin injury and is a doubt. Shaw could be forced to miss out after picking up an injury in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle despite playing the full 90 minutes.
