Gwyneth Paltrow is doing intermittent fasting *and* cleanses while in lockdown
The early days of Goop were somewhat fascinating because Gwyneth Paltrow was doing the bulk of the work herself, and it did have that personal touch. By “personal touch,” I mean that Gwyneth’s little quirks, lack of depth and her general credulity at pseudoscience became apparent repeatedly. It’s Gwyneth’s original sin, her interest in fad diets, pseudoscience and fake “healers.” Early Goop was a window into the real Gwyneth: the woman who spent the bulk of her time obsessing over fad diets, starving herself by way of “cleanses” and making up ailments that only wealthy white women suffer from. By her own descriptions, she did detox cleanses several times every month, and they were often just extreme versions of the biggest, dumbest fad diets. Guess what? She’s 47 years old and she’s still like that. She’s still obsessing over cleanses and whatever half-remembered diet her $1500-an-hour yogi told her about.
Gwyneth Paltrow has turned to intermittent fasting during lockdown. ‘Because I’m not traveling, it’s back to basics for the things that make me feel good: Ayurvedic eating for my dosha, intermittent fasting, and fresh, clean, nutrient-dense foods,’ she told GOOP.
The ancient health science of Ayurveda is built around the five elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. The unique combination of these elements come together to make up the doshas, or constitutions—vata, pitta, and kapha, according to the Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health. ‘I also gave myself a reset with Alejandro Junger’s CLEAN7. Pro tip: If you’re on a cleanse, take a date, split it in half, and spread almond butter on each side. If you’ve been cleansing, it tastes like a candy bar.’
Gwyneth has also been walking and doing yoga to keep fit. She said: ‘As far as workouts go, I’ve been streaming Bulldog Yoga, CorePower Yoga, The Class by Taryn Toomey, and Tracy Anderson, and I’ve been going for walks every day or every other day with Brad to get fresh air and a little sunshine.’
Along with looking after her physical health, Gwyneth has also been focusing on her mental health. She explained: ‘I’ve been exploring different breathing exercises to do, using apps like Headspace and The Breathing App, which I do for three minutes during the workday. It’s a short break that has a long-lasting impact. I’ve been trying to be more consistent about doing some wellness practices that work for me. I’ve made a commitment to start writing every day for five minutes because I’ve always been scared of journaling and don’t often write things down. It’s a daily micro mental challenge.’

“Ayurvedic eating for my dosha, intermittent fasting, and fresh, clean, nutrient-dense foods” and then “I also gave myself a reset with Alejandro Junger’s CLEAN7.” So many words for “I’m still starving myself, thanks for asking!” How many resets does she need every month? How often does she “fast”? I would be very curious to find out the reality of her disordered eating. As for everything else… God knows, she INVENTED yoga. She really does believe that. At some point, we do have to talk about how often Gwyneth appropriates from Hinduism and Indian culture too.
