Halsey Says Her Latest Single “Without Me” Is the Most Personal Song She’s Ever Written
Halsey made an appearance on Zane Lowe’s Apple Beats 1 radio show to discuss her new solo single “Without Me.” The interview was clearly pre-recorded, because Halsey talked about her Italian vacation as something she was looking forward to — when we now know that she already traveled to Italy for some R&R with significant other G-Eazy last week. Still, the interview offered a number of insights into Halsey’s mindset and creative process when it comes to the just-released track.
In her interview, Halsey reveals that “Without Me” is the first she’s ever written under her birth name, Ashley. “I think that’s what I’m kind of getting at is that it’s like it’s not protected by some character or some subplot,” she told Zane. “It’s like this is really me talking about my life. It kind of gave me like an existential crisis as an artist a little bit, because I’ve prided myself on being an artist who’s authentic and writes about her life and all that stuff. And then when I made this. And I felt just how bad it hurt.”
Halsey suggests that the song was written about her relationship with G-Eazy, with the suggestion that she wrote the song during the couple’s earlier breakup. So, in a way, the pain of the song gives a little clarity to Halsey’s current positive-seeming mood – in real life, she and G-Eazy made it through the split, and seem to be closer than ever.
