Jack P Shepherd steals Bill Roache-themed item from Coronation Street set in surprise move

The Big Soap Quiz: Jack P. Shepherd on stealing from Corrie set

Jack P Shepherd divulged he has stolen a “Newton and Ridley” bottle opener from the Coronation Street set. The unusual item apparently has Bill Roache’s (the actor who plays Ken Barlow) voice “sing” every time it is used to uncork a bottle of wine.

The Rovers Return Inn is a fictional pub in Coronation Street that was built by the fictional brewery, Newton and Ridley.

Jack was asked if he had ever stolen anything while working on the soap during an appearance on The Big Soap Quiz, hosted by Stephen Mulhern.

He confessed: “I nicked a Newton And Ridley bottle opener that sings.”

Jack added: “It is Bill Roache’s voice every time you uncork it, and it goes ‘Raise a glass to Coronation Street.’”

Bill has appeared in Coronation Street since it was first broadcast in 1960.

The actor appears in the Guinness World Records as the longest-serving male in a continuous role.

Meanwhile, Jack has starred in the soap for 20 years after landing the role of David Platt in the year 2000, when he was only 12-years-old.

On his Instagram, the star often shares throwback photos of himself throughout his years on Corrie.

Next to a recent collection of photos from his years on the programme, he typed: “Today marks my 20th year anniversary playing the role of David Platt, here’s a few photos of my life before I got the part and a few highlights of my character.

“Thank you @coronationstreet for everything.”

Jack, in a sweet snap of himself as a child wearing a Batman T-shirt, sparked fan nostalgia with a collection of David Platt’s most memorable moments from over the years.

One showed a young David with his pet bunny Barney, while others saw the son of Gail Platt with his ex-girlfriend Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan).

Also included in the tribute was his late on-screen wife Kylie (Paula Lane), as she lay in the funeral parlour after her tragic death back in 2016.

The star has just signed a new Coronation Street contract as he joins the “veterans” bracket of the show.

A source told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: “Jack might be classed as one of the younger stars but he’s got 20 years under his belt and that nearly puts him in the veterans’ bracket.

“He’s loved by fans young and old and is an important piece of the Corrie jigsaw.”

Bill has also signed a new contract to remain on the show for at least another year.

A source said: “These are the lifeblood of the show and, frankly, it would not be ‘Corrie’ without them.”

Simon Gregson (Steve McDonald), Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe), Michael Le Vell (Kevin Webster) and Sue Cleaver (Eileen Grimshaw) are among the cobbles legends who are said to have penned new contracts until “at least 2021”.

The source added to The Sun newspaper: “Despite a difficult year, bosses were delighted when they agreed on deals, keeping them on the screen until at least 2021.”
