James Nesbitt has been battling Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair to fall out in small patches. A source close to the TV star claimed that he sometimes uses make up to conceal the patches where there is no hair during filming.

The insider told MailOnline: “James has no issue at all with having alopecia.

“He’s been living with it for some time and it does not affect his life in any way.

“James has never tried to hide it while away from filming.

“But when he’s in character, it’s normal for make-up to be applied on that area where there is now no hair.”

Express.co.uk approached James’ representatives for comment, who confirmed that he had the condition.

His rep said: “I can confirm as guidance that James currently has Alopecia – like many people as it affects two per cent of the population but he won’t be making any comment.”

On Tuesday, James appeared on The One Show to discuss his work as a UK ambassador of Unicef, a charity also known as the United Nations Children’s Fund.

During his talk with hosts Sam Quek and Jermaine Jenus, he appeared to sport what some viewers referred to as “drawn on eyebrows”.

The actor’s appearance was heavily discussed by many on Twitter as some expressed confusion over his facial hair.

One user wrote: “James Nesbitt’s eyebrows are something to behold.

“It’s as if he’s fallen asleep and some mischievous children have got the felt top pens out.”

Another viewer added: “Does anyone know what’s happening to James Nesbitt’s eyebrows?

In 2017, James confirmed having undergone a hair transplant procedure, saying his hair loss had impacted his career.

He told the Radio Times: “Well I went public with it. I was very happy to be open about it.

“I just thought, ‘Come on, somebody is going to say it before I say it’.

“[Hair loss] was something I struggled with.

“And that was probably the vanity in me.

“But also career-wise it had an impact – in terms of the range of leading roles I’ve had since then it’s probably helped.”
