Jesy Nelson has revealed the excruciating lengths she took to change her looks after being left feeling ‘fat and awful’ during her Little Mix heyday.

The songstress, 30, who left the group in December, spoke to Glamour Magazine ahead of the release of her debut solo single Boyz about how liberated she feels as a solo artist following years of comparisons to her ‘teeny-tiny’ bandmates.

After years of candour over her body image and food battles during her time in the group, Jesy told the publication: ‘I’d starve myself, wear these corsets so tight I could barely breathe… I felt awful, I felt fat and that was how I always felt.’

In the wake of her departure from the group, Jesy – who tried to take her own life in 2013 due to relentless trolling over her image – revealed she is on a journey to self-acceptance, starting with quitting lip fillers and not wearing corsets.

Jesy announced her departure from Little Mix in 2020, one year after filming a BBC documentary Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, in which she revealed she had attempted to take her own life after years of relentless trolling and abuse.

On how she fought with body image during her torturous times in the group, Jesy made the heartbreaking revelation: ‘I’d starve myself for days and I’d wear these corsets every single day, pulled so tight I could barely breathe….

‘I used to wear corsets every single day to make my waist smaller which is mental but I so badly just wanted to look like Jade, Leigh and Perrie’.

She shockingly continued: ‘I couldn’t breathe half the time I was working and then my body would be covered in bruises from the corsets.’

Tough: The songstress, 30, who left the group in December, spoke to Glamour Magazine ahead of the release of her debut solo single Boyz

She recalled the stand-out moment, saying: ‘My first nightmare moment was our very first shoot when the stylist had all my clothes in a size 8 and I’m a 12. They didn’t fit. I felt awful, I felt fat and that was how I always felt.’

On overcoming her insecurities, she admitted that being able to go bare-faced is the mark for her of moving on from her demons.

She went on: ‘I’m not there yet, but I’m getting there. I don’t wear corsets, I stopped the lip fillers. I’m still wearing make-up, but nowhere near as much as I used to. My body confidence has improved so much.’

Jesy has been candid in the past about how she would starve herself before concerts and shoots. She told The Guardian: ‘I’d drink Diet Coke for a solid four days and then, when I felt a bit dizzy, I’d eat a pack of ham because I knew it had no calories…

‘Then I’d binge eat, then hate myself.’

Reflecting on how she saw her eating at the time, she said: ‘I could see that I was losing weight and sometimes I’d see a few good comments and that spiralled me to be like: ‘This is how I need to stay’.

In March last year, the star told MailOnline she had been thrown off her usual healthy regime by lockdown and had become the ‘laziest b***h ever’.

Changes: She revealed she would starve herself

She said: ‘I have become the laziest b***h ever! I am becoming a whale!’ All I’m doing is eating, the Deliveroo man is sick of seeing me!’

When asked whether she’s taken up a new skill during the shutdown, Jesy poked fun at herself as she said: ‘Hmmm, I want to say eating? See how much I can eat?

‘I’ve literally been the laziest b***h ever. I’m just really enjoying eating what I want. Normally I’d be thinking, ‘Oh God, I got a video next week, I need to fit into those latex trousers!”
