Kate Garraway opens up on tough Halloween celebrations without Derek Draper
Kate Garraway has opened up on celebrating Halloween this year without her husband Derek Draper.
The political advisor was rushed to hospital back in March after contracting coronavirus.
Just days after being admitted into the Intensive Care Unit, he was placed into a coma to help his body fight Covid-19.
However, while he no longer has the virus, it has wreaked havoc on his body, leaving him with a hole in his heart, kidney failure as well as diabetic.
And while he has a slight breakthrough over recent days, Kate is struggling to celebrate one of his favourite times of the year.
Taking to Instagram, the Good Morning Britain presenter shared a video of her house all done up for the spooky season with a spread of treats on her kitchen table.
In the caption, the newsreader wrote: ‘Tough day as Derek loves #halloween.
‘But the kids have encouraged me to get some of his favourite spooky kit out to celebrate him and feel better for it. Happy #halloween everyone.’
Fans were quick to comment as they sent their love to the family.
‘Stay Strong Kate,’ one wrote as another said: ‘You have been amazing throughout this Kate.’
Someone else added: ‘Happy Halloween to you Kate and your lovely family. You are truly amazing, don’t know how you remain so strong. Praying for you, Derek and the kids every day God bless.’
And it seems others felt the same: ‘Sending love and hugs. Keep going Kate you and the kids are amazing.’
Just yesterday, Kate shared Derek’s heartbreaking breakthrough as he said his first word since being hospitalised over six months ago.
As part of his recovery, doctors have been manipulating Derek’s body to prevent him from seizing up.
As Kate watched over FaceTime, he mouthed the word ‘pain’.
‘Right from the beginning, when Derek couldn’t even open his eyes, the doctors and nurses have always talked to him to be respectful, and to try to trigger a response,’ she told The Sun.
‘As they were shifting him, they asked if he could feel anything — not expecting a response as he hadn’t previously. But suddenly he mouthed in a whisper, “Pain”.’
The mum-of-two recalled how she burst into tears when finding out what he had said as she called it ‘heart-wrenching’ to see, but still a ‘huge breakthrough’.
