Kerry Katona claims she had an evil spirit in her house who wanted to take her son Max

Kerry Katona is always up for a bit of fun, so we couldn’t think of anyone better to join us for our spook-tacular Halloween-themed photoshoot.

The former Atomic Kitten star welcomed new into her Cheshire home – decorated with cobwebs and pumpkins – as she played dress-up alongside fiancé Ryan Mahoney, 33, and her children Lilly, 18, Heidi, 14, Max, 13, and seven-year-old Dylan-Jorge. Kerry also has a 20-year-old daughter, Molly, who lives in Ireland.

Looking incredible as she dons costumes including a vampire, a clown and a dead bride, Kerry tells us it’s her favourite time of the year. “I absolutely love Halloween,” she says. “I get really into it and it’s good fun dressing up.”

Kerry and the family moved into their stunning Alderley Edge home in June after previously living in Sussex. While she admits it was a big risk going back up north, the move has clearly been a success and they couldn’t be happier.

As they settle into their new life, Kerry and personal trainer Ryan, who got engaged in August last year, are now preparing to tie the knot – and are even thinking about having a baby together. However, Kerry insists they’re in no rush for either.

Here, Kerry, 41, opens up to new about her plans for Halloween, supernatural experiences and following her dreams…

You look fang-tastic, Kerry! Are you a fan of Halloween?

Absolutely. In fact, it’s my favourite time of the year. As soon as the trees start going brown and we get to Halloween and Bonfire Night, I get so excited. I love it.

Your outfits are amazing. Do you enjoy dressing up?

Yeah, it’s really good fun. I play dress-up for a living anyway because I do panto every year. And the kids love dressing up, too.

How are you celebrating this year?

We’ve got a big outdoor cinema coming with loads of chairs and beds – and inflatable spiders. Every year we watch Hocus Pocus, so we’ll do that. And then we’ll watch something scary like Halloween.

Last year, nobody could go trick or treating because of Covid, so we got the cinema. We enjoyed it so much, we’re doing it again. The kids can all bring one friend each. But this year we’re going to do it on the Friday night, and then on Halloween the kids will go out trick or treating.

Will you all be going trick or treating?

The kids will – I’ll stay at home. I’ll probably curl up on the sofa and watch a horror film with Ryan. One year, me, Lilly and DJ went trick or treating together. We knocked on this woman’s door and we just heard a massive bang and a stumble. We absolutely s*at ourselves and ran off! But then we went back to the house and it was actually an old lady who had fallen over coming down the stairs to get the door. The poor lady! We called an ambulance and sat with her, and I went back to check on her for the next few days. But she was fine, thankfully.

You have new neighbours this year…

I know! We’ve all got massive electric gates, so I’m not sure what the kids are going to do!

Do you let trick or treaters come to yours?

Yes, of course. I always have bowls of sweets for everyone. I’m well up for it. I love everything about Halloween.

Did you enjoy Halloween as a child?

My Halloween costume used to be a black bin bag, witch hat and witch fingers. I used to dress up like that every single year. I’ve always gone above and beyond for my kids, but one year I made them all wear bin bags. I got them white and black bin bags and I said to them, “There you go. Make your own costumes and go out like that.” But to be fair, they looked bloody good! I was impressed.

Lilly practises witchcraft and uses spells and tarot cards. What do you make of it?

I think it’s very positive. It’s all about what you give out to the universe is what you get in return – and I’m a massive believer in that. I use crystals and I’ve got my gratitude book where I write my affirmations. I just don’t do spells like Lilly does. It’s not that I’m not a believer, but she practises it more than I do.

You’re also into the supernatural. Have you ever had an encounter with a ghost?

Yeah, we had a paranormal activity team at our house. It was about six years ago. They told us there was a man in the house called John and he wanted us to leave – and that he wanted my son Max. It was when George [Kay, Kerry’s late husband] was still alive and they also told us that John gave George Bell’s palsy.

That’s terrifying…

Also, I’ve had this all my life, but the lights in the house constantly turn on and off. It happened in my old house and it’s been happening here, too. My bedroom is like a bloody disco!

Spooky! Are you settled in the house now?

We’re not fully unpacked yet. We’ve got loads of furniture to come. I don’t have any bedroom furniture and neither does Heidi. But we’re getting there – slowly but surely.

Do you have a favourite room?

I think it has to be the kitchen because it’s the family room and it’s where we all sit down together.

You’re currently renting the house. Do you have any plans to buy it?

We are thinking of buying it, but now isn’t the time. I’m not in the position to do that just yet.

Are you staying up north for good?

Yes, 100%. I was worried about coming back at first and whether we’d all like it, but it was definitely the right decision.

Does Ryan like it?

He loves it more up here than down south.

Does he miss his family and friends?

Of course. He has a great relationship with his family, and his brother often comes up. We’re making great new friends up here, too.

Do the kids feel settled?

Yeah, but Max still isn’t in a school yet. I’ve had a nightmare with it. Every school I’ve tried has turned him down because there’s not enough room. I’ve put in another application, so we’re just waiting.

We’ve been here since June, so it’s not ideal. A company called Eden Tutors got in touch and they’re going to tutor him in the meantime. It’s not just about his education, it’s also about his social skills. He does boxing three days a week, so thank God he’s been able to make new friends that way. Heidi and DJ are in the same school. It’s a private all-girls’ school.

Has Molly been able to come over and visit you in your new home?

She came when we first moved in, but we haven’t seen her since then. It’s hard because she’s in Ireland, and also with all the Covid travel rules. But she’s coming over in November and she’ll be here for Christmas.

You’ve previously said you and Ryan want to have a baby together. Is that still in the pipeline?

Yeah, definitely. But having a child right now would be a negative thing for us. There’s no way we could have a baby because things are just too hectic. It’s not the right time. I had an appointment about freezing my eggs and that’s definitely the next step. But that’s as far as we’re going for now. Me and Ryan were on Steph’s Packed Lunch last week and we interviewed a couple who went through surrogacy. It was so interesting. We learnt things we had no idea about.

Such as?

If we do go down the surrogacy route, Ryan’s name would go on the birth certificate but I wouldn’t be able to put my name on it for six months. Even though the child would be biologically mine, the woman who carries the baby goes on the birth certificate.

And if you do it in the UK, she can change her mind and keep it. That’s mind-blowing to me. So if you go through surrogacy, you’ve got to really want to do it because it’s so full-on. We’re not making any decisions at the moment.

You’re now a regular presenter on Steph’s Packed Lunch. Do you enjoy it?

It’s really good fun. I film a lot of VTs for them. People forget that when I left Atomic Kitten, I went straight into presenting. Obviously my private life and the reality shows took over, but presenting is what I went into.

How did Ryan find being on camera?

Ryan is lovely on camera but he’s so quiet. It’s very much me doing all the talking – only because he can’t get a word in!

How are your wedding plans going?

I have my dress but we don’t have any plans or dates set yet. All we know is that we want to go to Vegas. We’re in no rush.

You’ve had such a busy year. Are you hoping next year will be a bit quieter?

No, I want it to be twice as busy! We’re building our empire. Me and Ryan are go-getters and we’re chasing our dreams – you’re not going to get that just by sitting around on your arse.
