Klopp reveals the huge decision Liverpool players made for him

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that player power installed Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool’s captain-in-waiting.

The commanding Dutch defender was installed as skipper for the midweek Champions’ League blitz of Red Star Belgrade, in the absence of regular captain Jordan Henderson and his deputy James Milner.

But the Reds boss explained that he himself didn’t make the decision on who will wear in the armband if the experienced pair don’t play, and instead he put it to a vote of all the players. And Klopp said:

“It probably says a lot about Virgil (he was captain), but it was not my decision.

“I decided Henderson and Milner will stay as captain and vice-captain – that is the 100% logical thing to do and it would have been as well like that if we had voted.

“And then I said the next two, the players can vote, and now the two Dutch guys are in the row.

“The team decided number three for Virgil and number four for Gini Wijnaldum.

“If somebody had told me that that would happen in my life as a German, the two Dutch guys would have such an important role…!

“It’s a player’s decision.”

Van Dijk could keep the armband with Henderson definitely ruled out of the game against Cardiff at the weekend, with Klopp also confirming that Naby Keita is not fit to play.

Milner is fit to return after a hamstring niggle, but he may not come back immediately, with both Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri performing so well alongside the impressive Gini Wijnaldum.

Adam Lallana is also pushing for a return after playing so well when he started at Huddersfield last weekend.

Klopp also confirmed that apart from long term injuries Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rhian Brewster, everyone else is cleared to play against Cardiff.
