Love Islands Gemma says famous dad Michael Owen not happy about her going into the villa
Gemma Owen has admitted that her dad, England legend Michael Owen, was "not happy" she is going into the Love Island villa.
But the former Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Real Madrid striker has since given the 19 year old his blessing, as he trusts her not to "embarrass" him.
The Team GB dressage champion and swimwear brand owner said that her footballer dad, 42, "isn't buzzing" she is going onto the dating show, but gave her his blessing saying "I'm not going to tell you what to do".
Speaking from Mallorca ahead of the series' launch on Monday, Gemma signalled her intentions to dispel misconceptions about being a footballer's daughter, saying she received nasty comments from trolls about her privileged upbringing.
She told the MailOnline: "I still wouldn't say that my dad is buzzing about me doing Love Island.
"He's very supportive in whatever I decide to do. He didn't have a massive tantrum or anything like that. He was pretty chilled, he trusts me not to do anything to embarrass him. He took it quite well.
"He didn't say I couldn't do this or give me any dos or don'ts. He said I'm not going to tell you what to do, I trust you, you have never given us a reason not to trust you, go for it but I will always have my family's thoughts and opinions in the forefront of my mind because we are all super close and they are the most important people to me."
Gemma is the eldest of Michael Owen's four children, whom he shares with his wife, Louise.
She said that she has discussed her appearance on the show, and that they trust her not to disrespect them.
She continued: "I definitely discussed it with them. I wouldn't say that they were 100 per cent happy with it, but I would definitely say they trust me… not to do anything to purposely disrespect them."
Gemma also added she is probably going to avoid having sex in the villa, repeating "what my family think is always going to be in the forefront of my mind".
Michael has given his daughter some words of wisdom before flying out to Mallorca, while her mother reminded her to "keep it classy".
Gemma has definitely taken this to heart, saying that she refuses to brag about her dad's famous career, regardless of if her potential suitors are die-hard football fans.
She said: "I don't think I'm going to go in there and say 'my dad was a footballer' because I am not really that type of person but if they ask me what my parents do then I won't keep it a secret, I'll be honest but I won't go in there bragging about it. I'll only address it if people ask me."
Love Island airs on ITV 2 at 9pm on Monday, June 6 – as well as being available on ITV Hub.
