Matt Baker: ‘That’s a nightmare’ Countryfile host shares surprising marriage revelation

Matt Baker, 42, has been married to his wife Nicola Baker since 2004 and have two children, Molly and Luke, together. The Countryfile presenter and his other half keep busy outside of their careers, as they own a farmhouse together in Hertfordshire.

Matt opened up about the couple’s home life in a recently unearthed interview with The Sunday People’s Love Sunday magazine from 2015.

He said that although Nicola is “phenomenal” and “very patient”, his work commitments can be “a nightmare” for her at times.

The One Show star revealed: “We’ve got sheep, chickens, dogs – our dog’s just had eight puppies – a cat, tropical fish.

“We’ve also got orchards and paddocks, so if I’m not cutting the grass, I’m training the sheep. Or I’m in the wood yard building something.

“I’m a farmer’s son, so I was taught to get on with things and do them myself.

“But that’s a nightmare for my wife, because it means we’ve been doing the house up for a long time because of my work schedule.”

Crediting his wife’s support, Matt added: ”She’s phenomenal, my wife. She’s very patient.

“People say, ‘How do you fit so much in?’ But in truth I couldn’t if it wasn’t for her.”

Matt launched his TV career on Blue Peter in 2000 and has hosted Countryfile since 2009.

He went on to join The One Show in 2011, but announced he will be stepping down from his presenting role on the programme in an emotional speech last year.

Sharing the news with viewers, Matt said: “I’ve loved that the One Show has been such a big part of my life for the last nine years

“It’s been brilliant to showcase the eclectic mix of Britain, meet incredible people along the way and witness so many lives changed with the annual Rickshaw Challenge for Children in Need.

“I’d like to thank all those I’ve worked with over the years and especially you the viewer for showing me so much support during my time on the green sofa.”

Elsewhere, Matt opened up about a “surprising” new addition to his family in a candid Instagram post earlier this month.

The small-screen star revealed they had welcomed an “early lamb” into their flock, but admitted she was sadly unwell.

Matt shared a photo of the tiny animal in view of his 97,000 followers as she rested after being born.

Fulfilling his promise to keep his fans updated on the situation, the presenter posted a video of the lamb’s progress.

While feeding the newborn sheep through a bottle, Matt admitted: “This is our first little lamb.

“Didn’t expect to start lambing yet, but we’ve been taken by surprise and this one isn’t very well.”

Fortunately, the lamb appeared to be much healthier towards the end of the video, as Matt soothingly said: “You look a lot better now than you did a while back.”

Countryfile airs tonight at 5.50pm on BBC One.
