Michael Owen reveals why he refused to watch daughter Gemma’s Love Island challenges

Michael Owen has admitted that he didn't watch certain Love Island episodes in order to avoid seeing his daughter Gemma taking part in saucy challenges and kissing people.

The former footballer, 42, opened up about how he felt watching 19 year old Gemma on the hit ITV2 dating show over recent months, insisting he had "no worries" about her heading into the famous villa but he did have some initial reservations about the show.

“It wasn't the best of conversations when she first asked me about going on Love Island," Michael, who also shares son James, 16, and daughters Emily, 14, and Jessica, 12 with wife Louise, admitted, according to The Sun.

Despite not being worried about his eldest child going on the dating show, there were certain episodes Michael purposefully didn't watch in order to avoid seeing Gemma taking part in challenges and kissing people on screen.

“She's pretty sensible and she's a good kid and I had no worries. I just didn't bring myself to watch some of the challenges and things like that.

"I don't like seeing my daughter kiss people, but I probably watched 30 to 40% of the show," the 42 year old said, before going on to explain that he'd get his wife Louise to keep him updated about the episodes he didn't watch.

"On the days that I didn't watch, I was on the phone to the wife (Louise) at five past ten asking, 'how did she do?'"

The former professional footballer is pleased with how his daughter did on Love Island and opened up about the "great feedback" she's received from viewers.

He continued: “I know it's been great feedback and she's done well. I think it's been good for – she's had a good time.”

International dressage rider Gemma, who is Michael's eldest child with wife Louise, came in second place on Love Island alongside fishmonger Luca Bish, 23.

Luca, who hails from Brighton, jetted off on a family holiday to Portugal with Gemma shortly after they left the Love Island, where he finally got to meet her famous dad and siblings.

Speaking on Capital Radio recently, Gemma gushed over the meeting and said it was "so nice". Flashing a big smile, the 19 year old reality TV star said: “Yeah it couldn’t have gone better, it was so nice!

“We got away for four days, it was a bit of like, got a bit of content, bit of chill time but yeah it was a really nice environment for him to meet everyone. They all get on really well and how he was with my brothers and sisters as well, like, so cute!”

Luca was reportedly nervous about meeting Michael, especially as Gemma shares an extremely close bond with him.

An insider revealed to The Sun: "Luca has been nervous about meeting Michael which is, of course, totally natural.

“He adores Gemma and knows that he has to impress. They flew out from Gatwick to spend time with him and Gemma’s mum at their private villa in Quinta Do Lago.

“Luca is a nice lad and Gemma has no doubt he will win him over but of course it is nerve wracking.”
