In line with the Government’s advice, Piers Morgan, 55, and Susanna Reid, 49, have been adhering to social distancing rules on the show in recent months, but a clever camera trick made it look as though they were a little too close on the show today.

Trying out a trick on the split screen, the pair jokingly leaned in for a kiss to see how it would look on camera.

After a failed first attempt, their co-star Ranvir Singh urged them to do it slower, which prompted producers to play sexy-themed music to set the scene.

In a second attempt, the hosts got close again, with the fake kiss appearing a little more realistic.

The presenters struggled to stay serious as the split screen meant various body parts were being cut out of the shot.

Good Morning Britain shared a clip of the duo’s humorous moment on Twitter today alongside the caption: “Oh wow. We weren’t expecting this!”

Social media users swiftly flocked to the post to share their thoughts.

One commented: “#GMB wtf am I watching.”(sic)

A second commented: “Can we have more news please?

“I can see ratings falling soon, or is this the kind of thing the average GMB viewer wants to see? #gmb.”

A third penned: “How can anyone take this show and it’s presenters seriously!”

“It’s nice to have a bit of banter and a lighthearted moment on GMB in the morning,” a fourth commented.

“We live in uncertain times and we need smiles and laughter.”

The pair’s humorous moment occurred after Piers revealed he had dinner with EastEnders star Jake Wood recently.

The latter informed the host about the soap’s camera tricks amid filming during the coronavirus pandemic.

He told viewers: “They all have to be done through perspex glass, and even better, they’re bringing in the partners – male and female – of the stars.

“The real life partners are being brought in for the steamy close up kissing stuff, and they’re wearing wigs.”

Intrigued at the thought, Susanna replied: “Do you know what? You could do it, using the split screen!”

After testing it out, Piers branded the duo’s fake kissing attempts “fantastic”.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
