Piers Morgan, 56, appeared on the witty BBC panel show once back in 1996, but his episode spiralled into a bit of a car crash. The former Good Morning Britain star suffered a brutal roasting from his fellow panellists throughout the episode – and he clashed with Private Eye chief Ian Hislop on a number of occasions.

The episode turned heated when Hislop accused Piers of watching him and even spying on his house.

Piers had been the editor of the Daily Mirror at the time, having previously been the editor of News of the World for a year until 1995.

At one point, Piers’ war of words with Hislop turned so tense that show host Angus Deayton asked if they wanted to leave the studio to go outside and have a fight.

Later in the show, Hislop took another savage dig at Piers after the bold broadcaster had complained about Eddie Izzard getting a laugh for what he deemed to be a poor joke.

When shown a question in the Odd One Out round, Morgan had quipped: “Is the answer ‘jam?'”, referencing a joke made by Izzard on the show the previous week.

Piers had said: “Last week Eddie Izzard said it and everyone roared with laughter as if it was hilarious.”

Hislop fired back that people laughed at Izzard’s joke because “people like him”.

Hislop went on to successfully make the jam joke later in the episode, receiving a laugh from the audience.

Piers fumed: “Don’t play the popularity line with me, Hislop.”

He then protested, asking the audience: “Does anyone actually like him [Ian]?”, but the studio audience was clearly on Hislop’s side as they loudly cheered him on.

Taking to Instagram, Piers looked back on his “awful memories” from appearing on the BBC panel show.

He posted a snap from the show documenting the moment radio presenter Clive Anderson took a savage swipe at him.

Piers had asked: “What do you know about editing newspapers, Clive?”

Clive responded: “About as much as you do!”

Alongside the snap, Piers penned: “My first… and last appearance on Have I Got News For You back in 1996. Thanks for the (awful) memories.”

The journalist clearly saw the funny side of the bombshell episode though, because he added several crying with laughter face emojis.

In response to the post, Piers’ fans shared their memories of the episode as they marvelled at his youthful looks.

@MissEmilyCupcake typed: “You look like a mash-up of a young Colin firth and Charlie higson in your younger years.”

While @CraigBailey wrote: “Look how young you look there.”

@Jalecanderrigby said: “You’re a good sport @piersmorgan – always happy to laugh at yourself. A thoroughly good egg.”
