Gemma Collins, 40, joined Piers Morgan, 56, on the most recent episode of Life Stories last night, and it’s safe to say the instalment caused quite a stir on social media. Met with mixed reviews, Piers jumped to her defence after one viewer took aim at the reality TV star over her celebrity status and questioned why she was invited onto the show at all.

The ITV show has seen the likes of Richard Branson, the late Barbara Windsor, Elton John, Michael Barrymore and Pamela Anderson appear alongside the Good Morning Britain host to talk about their lives and careers.

It’s no lie that Gemma has become one of the most talked about reality stars in the UK, with her caricature “The GC” also becoming a staple of “diva power” that landed her on programs such as I’m A Celebrity and Dancing On Ice.

The in-depth interview saw the pair chat about her rise to TV fame from the franchise show The Only Way is Essex, her relationships and online trolling, but the episode was met with some criticism from viewers watching at home.

One disgruntled fan replied to Piers on Twitter, voicing their opinion on her instalment.

“Have you thought about doing this series with celebs/famous people?” they retorted with a slight to the reality star.

But it wasn’t long before the outspoken host hit back with one of his famous swipes.

He simply responded: “Gemma has 1.2 million more followers than you.”

The acknowledgment prompted users to question how we as a society today measure what makes someone a celebrity.

But there were others who enjoyed the show, with one writing: “Anyone who doesn’t know GC must be hiding under a rock for the last 8 years. If you do know her, it’s because she’s famous. To many critics trying to find something to pick at for a reaction.”

A second agreed: “What a fantastic interview with @GemnaCollins. She is an inspiration.”

The interview was particularly emotional at times but one moment saw Gemma lost for words when Piers brought up her first appearance in Snobs in 2000.

The series was a show about people who think they are a different class with Gemma revealing she was worried about it.

“How did you get the footage? Throughout my whole career, I’ve always been worried about that first programme,” she asked Piers.

The host replied: “Snobs in 2000, that was your first thing on TV.

“You went to a TV agent to see if they would take you on. Do you remember what they said to you?”

When Gemma admitted she didn’t, Piers revealed: “She said that you had the charisma but you were too fat to be on TV, and suggested you lose two stone.”

“Charming,” Gemma remarked, “Look where I am now honey? Yeah, well she can eat her words now.

“But I never gave up and I think people admire that about me.

“I have not been blessed with a Victoria’s Secret’s body but it’s my body and I love it. I am what I am.”

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight on ITV at 9pm.
