Prince Harry Was “Really Let Down” by His Father, Prince Charles
No topic was left untouched in Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s big interview with Oprah Winfrey, including where their relationship with the royal family stands today.
After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals, relocated to the U.S., and took a public stand against the British tabloid press, unfortunately Harry feels “really let down” by his father, Prince Charles.
“There’s a lot to work through there,” he told Winfrey when asked about how his relationship with the Prince of Wales is now.
“I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar,” he continued, likely referencing the death of Princess Diana, Prince Charles’s first wife. “He knows what pain feels like. And Archie’s his grandson. But at the same time, I will always love him. But there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened. And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship. But they only know what they know.”
“Or what they’re told,” Meghan added.
“And I’ve tried to educate them through the process that I’ve been educated,” Harry continued. He also revealed that at one point Charles “stopped taking my calls.”
Of his older brother Prince William, Harry said there’s “much more to say about” their relationship. “I love William to bits he’s my brother we’ve been through hell together. But we were on different paths.”
Later, he added of his and William’s dynamic, “Our relationship is ‘space’ at the moment. And time heals all things, hopefully.”
Prince Harry’s relationship with the queen still seems to be strong.
“I’ve spoken more to my grandmother in the last year than I have done for many, many years,” he said. “My grandmother and I have a really good relationship. And an understanding. And I have a deep respect for her. She’s my colonel in chief, right? She always will be.”
Harry even revealed to James Corden that the monarch sent his family a waffle maker for his son, Archie, as a gift.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their stepping back as senior working royals in January 2020, and confirmed they would not return as working members of the monarchy just last month.
Considering the monumental move, Harry has clarified that he and Meghan didn’t “walk away” from the royal family. “It was never walking away, it was stepping back rather than stepping down,” he explained to James Corden in a recent interview.
Despite the Sussexes’ stepping back and relocating, Meghan has reportedly kept in touch with Prince Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie, given their overlapping pregnancies. Meghan is currently expecting her second child (a girl!) while the princess just welcomed a baby boy last month. During the interview, Meghan revealed that she was even familiar with Eugenie before meeting Harry.
The world is likely waiting to see how Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family will continue to grow from this point forward.
