Rod Stewart sees in New Year with wife Penny and six of his children

SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Rod Stewart rings in the New Year with wife Penny Lancaster and six of his children

If you’ve struggled to gather together your family over Christmas, spare a thought for Sir Rod Stewart.

The singer, who has eight children with five different women, managed to persuade six of his offspring to join him for a New Year’s celebration.

Reclining on the floor in front of the Christmas tree, Sir Rod, 74, clasps the leg of his wife, former model and Loose Women panellist Penny Lancaster, 48.

One of their sons, Alastair, 14, stands on her left, while Aiden, eight, lies next to Daddy.

Now that’s a Quality St outfit, Liz!

Quality Street confectionery has been consumed in vast quantities over the festive period, but for Elizabeth Hurley it apparently serves as inspiration for her outfits.

The actress and model turned up for a New Year’s bash in a blonde wig and plunging metallic mini-dress that left fellow party-goers wondering if she had gone as the hazelnut choc choice.

Not that super-slim Liz, 54, has been scoffing them herself. She avoids sweets, as well as bread, pasta, cheese and crisps…

Shooting scenes for the new series of hit ITV detective drama Vera at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium made its dog-loving star, Brenda Blethyn, very happy.

‘It was lovely seeing the greyhounds,’ she said. ‘Jack [a cockapoo] is the first dog I’ve had and I can’t imagine how I’ve got to the age I am without ever having one.

‘Although I’m not the best trainer, I did take him to lessons when we first got him.

‘He got his silver certificate for good behaviour and obedience. But he ate it.’

Theresa May memorably claimed the ‘naughtiest’ thing she had done was run through fields of wheat.

Now, her fellow former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith has his own confession.

He was once driven at 100mph — although he was in the back seat at the time.

‘It was in the late Fifties when there were no speed limits on the M1,’ he tells me.

‘My siblings and I were desperate for Dad to “do a ton”, so when the speedometer hit 100mph us kids in the back all cheered our heads off.

‘Thankfully, Dad was a former RAF fighter pilot and had the most fantastic reactions.’

Naked truth: Mary really is a history buff

Dame Mary Beard, who’s had to put up with unkind remarks about her appearance over the years, says we all need to overcome our insecurities about our bodies.

Due to present a BBC2 series called Shock Of The Nude, the historian tells me: ‘We get anxious about which bits we should see and where we should see them.

Dame Mary Beard, who’s had to put up with unkind remarks about her appearance over the years, says we all need to overcome our insecurities about our bodies

‘Our relationship to nude paintings is difficult because we’re always comparing and there’s no one set way on how our body parts should look.’

The Cambridge classicist adds: ‘It also raises the question: “What is the difference between art and porn — is it always soft porn?”’
