Watch a Flat Matthew McConaughey Suffer an Existential Crisis in This Super Bowl Ad
It’s been a year—Matthew McConaughey gets it. In a zany, new Super Bowl spot, the Oscar-winning actor plays himself. Er, a version of himself.
“Flat Matthew” is all of us, longing for the lives we lived before a pandemic changed everything about them. In the 30-second ad slated to air on Sunday, the actor’s pummeled by a football, disappears at a coffee shop, nearly loses his life to a floor vacuum, and flies away while walking his dog. Accomplishing basic tasks feel harder than ever for poor Flat Matthew.
“Life used to feel fuller,” the actor narrates. “Some days are harder than others, it’s like I used to be solid ground.” Actress Mindy Kaling and Late Night’s Jimmy Kimmel also make an appearance alongside Flat Matthew. “Did you drive here or did you travel by fax?” Kimmel quips as Flat Matt looks on.
Thankfully, 3D Doritos are here to the rescue, and 3D McConaughey is now stuck in a vending machine. And while a bag of chips may not fulfill the rest of us emotionally right now, at least we have this commercial to laugh at.
