Whatever Happened To American Idol’s Trent Harmon?
After winning the fifteenth season of American Idol in 2016, Trent Harmon landed a lucrative deal with Big Machine Records, but it was a long wait for fans of the country star to actually get any new music. Following what seemed like a two-year hiatus, Harmon finally released his debut album You Got ‘Em All in 2018 (via NY Country Swag).
While fans of the singer may have grown impatient, Harmon was glad he took his time with the writing and recording process. “I wasn’t ready,” he told People. “But once I started down that process, I realized, oh, I have songs. I have a message. I know what I need to say. I know who I need to say it to.”
The songs on the album were all inspired by his closest relationships, and the title track was specifically written for his now-wife Kathleen Couch. Harmon revealed to People that he wrote the song after Couch told him she wanted to travel overseas to continue her teaching work. “I’d call it uncharted territory,” the musician explained. “We don’t want to be with anybody else. I don’t want to be with anybody else … so neither of us are holding each other back from accomplishing anything … It’s a weird place in our relationship.”
Trent Harmon's debut record featured a popular Sia song
Fast forward to 2020, and the couple tied the knot despite the ongoing pandemic. As Trent Harmon explained on Instagram, their wedding was initially planned for May, but was postponed until October. The rising star shared a succession of photos from his wedding with the note, “Been a good year. Lots of laughs.. lots of tears.”
As for the rest of Harmon’s debut record, among his own songs, the singer also included “Falling” (co-written by Keith Urban) and Sia’s “Chandelier”; two songs that he sang in the finals of American Idol. According to Harmon, he did this for the fans and asked them what they wanted to hear directly via social media. “Rather than just telling them, ‘This is what we’re doing and I know you’re doing to like it,’ I’ll ask them what they like and try to do more of that,” he told The Boot.
Harmon has been pretty quiet on the possibility of a second album, but has recently started performing small gigs again as evidenced on his Facebook page. Perhaps a follow-up to You Got ‘Em All will come in due course.
