What is metastatic cancer?
Metastatic cancer is a cancer that has spread from its initial site to another location within the host’s body. Each of the new sites are called metastases.
Dr Ramakant Deshpande, an oncosurgeon at the Asian Cancer Institute told the Times of India: ‘Metastasis is a term for cancer that spreads to a different part of the body from where it has originated.
‘It happens when cancer cells break away from the main tumor and enter the bloodstream which, in turn, can form new tumors in different parts of the body.’
He added: ‘The cancer cells often grow quickly and one may need different treatment approaches than low grade cancers.’
She added that she was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love she has received on social media since she revealed she was suffering with the disease.
The star told followers that their stories had given her an extra ‘dosage of strength.’
Last week, she broke the news to her fans, saying: ‘Sometimes when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball… which we frankly did not see coming.’
