What do Paris Hilton’s primate playdate and Tyra Banks’ hot tub interview have in common — other than their potential to go viral, that is?
For both moments, the stars sported pieces from PatBO, a Brazilian brand that’s quickly emerging as a staple for special celebrity moments.
“I really believe fashion needs to be fun and you can do whatever you want,” Patricia Bonaldi, PatBO’s founder and creative director, told Page Six Style of her eponymous label.
The designer recalls Rihanna and Sharon Stone as among the first stars to wear her hand-embroidered creations back in 2013; cut to 2021, and her dresses, swimsuits and bodysuits have been worn by a slew of celebrities, including Vanessa Hudgens, Mindy Kaling, Selena Gomez and Priyanka Chopra.
Many of the celeb-loved pieces feature the brand’s signature side cutouts designed to show just the right amount of skin — a sexy-yet-subtle effect Bonaldi achieves by trying out each look on her own body first.
“I understand women’s bodies and I understand what they want to show [and] what they want to hide,” said the designer, describing the PatBO girl as simultaneously “fearless” and “feminine.”
It’s an apt description for Hilton, who in February slipped on a plunging almond-colored PatBO maxi ($750) while celebrating her birthday with a crowd … of lemurs, that is.
“She wore it for the lemurs, it was pretty great,” said Savannah Engel, whose PR company represents PatBO. “The lemurs were all over that dress … [They] literally attacked that dress. It was so funny.”
In the same spontaneous spirit, Banks made waves in a rainbow ombré PatBO bodysuit ($475) in July, soaking in a hot tub while interviewing Megan Thee Stallion for a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit video.
While she quickly went viral for her sparkling style, which many mistook for a ballgown, Bonaldi loved the look.
“For me, it’s not something that she shouldn’t do,” the designer said, clarifying that the sunset-hued suit can also be used for swimming. “She’s fun, and my brand is fun. I love to experiment.”
PatBo’s also proven to be a popular New Year’s Eve party pick for major names. Priyanka Chopra chose a neon pink number to ring in 2020 in Miami Beach with husband Nick Jonas, while Alexis Ren and Alessandra Ambrosio — the latter of whom walked in the brand’s first-ever New York Fashion Week show on Wednesday — both kicked off 2021 wearing Bonaldi’s designs.
And although the cutout frocks work well for warm-weather getaways, Camila Cabello’s spin on the style brought the heat in a different way. While performing her song “Señorita” at the 2019 VMAs with boyfriend Shawn Mendes, the singer sparkled in a custom mesh PatBO gown studded with crystals.
“[The dresses] are not heavy,” Bonaldi said of her breathable creations, which can easily go from shore to stage. “She can move and she can feel comfortable.”
But while her starry “PatBO family” continues to grow — and she’s got a list of celebs she’d love to dress in the future, topped by Dua Lipa — Bonaldi doesn’t foresee ever feeling like she’s truly “made it.”
“I love the process,” she said of her work. “I never feel like it’s the only moment. Each day is a big day for me.”
