Cody Simpson rebounds from Gigi Hadid with Broadway debut

Australian pop star Cody Simpson hasn’t made his Broadway debut in “Anastasia” yet, but he’s already getting fan mail at the Broadhurst Theatre.

“I thought, ‘Don’t jump the gun guys,’ I might not be any good,” Simpson says.

The 21-year-old crooner, who famously dated Gigi Hadid on-and-off for two years, will take over the lead role of Dmitry starting on Nov. 29.

“I’ve been in rehearsals for a month doing something different every day, whether it’s blocking choreography or doing a scene … it’s not all that different from preparing for a tour,” the “La Da Dee” singer says.

Simpson will star alongside Broadway veteran John Bolton and fan-favorite Christy Altomare in the show, which has been running since May 2017.

“He’s incredible, rehearsals are going really well,” Altomare, who plays the title role, says of the Aussie singer-songwriter.

Simpson’s casting follows a string of pop stars being tapped for Broadway stints, including Brendon Urie of Panic at the Disco, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters in “Kinky Boots” and Katharine McPhee in “Waitress.”

“I watched the (1997 Fox animation) movie ‘Anastasia’ as a kid and when I heard about this show I was like, ‘Wait, that Anastasia?’” Simpson says. “I actually sing a lot of musical theatre-style stuff in my spare time, so I feel like a came into this pretty prepared.”

Theatre fans can find out for themselves when he takes the stage in “Anastasia” from Nov. 29 through Feb. 17.
