Couple transform guest bedroom door into bookcase

Creative couple conceal a bedroom door behind a bookshelf to create a hidden entrance worthy of a murder mystery – and you even pull on a novel to turn the handle

A creative couple revealed how they ‘hid’ a bedroom door behind a bookshelf to create a secret entrance worthy of a murder mystery.

Carrie and Kyle Dorr, from Saint Michael, Minnesota, transformed the door to their guest bedroom by removing it from its hinges, painting it, and attaching shelves to create the appearance of a bookcase.

They finished the effect by concealing the doorknob behind a book, meaning guests have to pull the novel away from the shelf in order to enter.

Carrie shared the lockdown project with fellow DIY enthusiasts on the DIY On a Budget Facebook group where it received more than 20,000 likes and raked in 3,000 comments.

Carrie posted on the Facebook group: ‘While we’re quarantined, I asked my husband to make the door to our spare bedroom into a bookshelf / secret door.

‘I could not be more thrilled with the results!!! And it was inexpensive too!! Everything was hand made from scratch by [my husband] Kyle Dorr.’

Carrie, who works at an animal rescue center, shared a video to the group showing how to access the room.

Kyle later shared how he created the project so that other users could try it for themselves.

Kyle revealed how he took the oak panelled door apart and fixed a wider frame to the outside of the door hinges to appear as the bookshelf.

He then stained the entirety of the wood dark brown to contrast against the other doors in the hallway.

And the magic behind the secret doorway was revealed when Kyle pictured a book tied to a door knob with wire – allowing guests to pull the novel to access the bedroom.

Fellow bookworms were amazed by the idea and hailed the DIY project ‘a fantastic idea’.

Catherine Anscomb, from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, tagged her husband Kevin New and said: ‘Can I have one on every door please?’

Diana Camelia Corpade said: ‘Love it! It would be nice to the same for our reading room.’

‘Very clever! I’m saving this for future reference ideas! Thanks for sharing!, Charleen Carden Johnson added.
