Dupont twin Richard remembers Andy Warhol as being a great kisser
Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series “The Andy Warhol Diaries” has one of the deceased pop artist’s former lovers remembering his smooch — and how he dumped him.
“Andy was a great kisser,” Richard DuPont told Page Six on Tuesday.
Richard — one half of the infamous Dupont twins — and his brother, Richard, were regulars at Studio 54 and befriended Warhol there in 1977.
“I was a high school junior at Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield, Connecticut,” Dupont recalled.
The twins are not interviewed in Murphy’s upcoming docuseries, but Richard told us he’s been getting messages asking about his intimate relationship with Warhol when he was just a teen. In 1979 when he was 19, he told us that Warhol told him he loved him.
“I was Andy Warhol’s Valentine in 1979. Andy told me after kissing me at [famed club] Regine’s in NYC that he loved me, and I told Andy I loved him. Andy was a great kisser,” he said.
But Warhol’s assistant, Rupert, was dating Richard’s twin, Robert, after they first met at Studio 54. Warhol dumped Richard when Rupert and Robert split. (Say that three-times fast!)
“[Warhol] said to me, ‘I need to make money, Richard… and Rupert makes me money. I can’t have you around all the time because you will remind Rupert of your brother Robert,’” the spurned Richard recalled.
Murphy’s docuseries is based on Warhol’s 1987 book. Dupont told us “a lot of people were angry about things published in ‘Diaries,’” when it came out — including him.
“I was embarrassed and I had to come out to my mother and family in Connecticut because before [the book], I was a closeted gay,” he said.
One silver lining of his romance with Warhol was meeting then Studio 54 It girl and cable access host Nikki Haskell, he told us.
“He introduced my brother and I to Nikki when he ended our relationship and we became producers of her TV show. That was a great thing Andy did,” he concluded.
