The First Trailer for HBO's 'Sharp Objects' Miniseries Is Utterly Chilling

We know you’re craving more Big Little Lies in the worst way, but a new HBO series (from BLL‘s director, no less!) will take your mind off the wait for Season 2 real quick.

Sharp Objects comes from the brilliant, twisted mind of Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn; the eight-episode series will air in July and is based on Flynn’s first novel, published in 2007. Amy Adams, in her first TV role since her three-episode The Office cameo, plays reporter Camille Preaker, who returns to her hometown to investigate the murders of two young girls, unearthing her own private demons in the process. Patricia Clarkson plays her mother, Adora, and Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins, Matt Craven, and It breakout Sophia Lillis also star.

Tonight, the teaser trailer for the show premiered ahead of the first episode of Westworld Season 2, promising a nightmarish experience right from the start. Set to the tinny chimes of a nursery rhyme, the trailer opens with a young woman’s voiceover declaring she’s not afraid of ghosts. As Adams’ Camille embarks on her investigation, beginning a descent into a frightening unknown, Clarkson’s Adora wanders the halls of her ghoulish Victorian manse, welcoming a hesitant Camille home. Oh, and there’s a dollhouse, which is always a harbinger of doom, no matter the context.

Flynn wrote the scripts with showrunner Marti Noxon; Big Little Lies director Jean-Marc Vallée will helm all eight episodes. If the trailer didn’t scare you enough, Blumhouse Productions (the company responsible for Get Out, Insidious, and The Purge, to name a few) is producing the series.

Sharp Objects premieres in July on HBO.
