The 30-minute check usually costs £15 at the bike and motoring retailer.

It includes 10 checks such as tyre depth and inflation, battery health, headlights and brake lights as well as coolant and oil levels.

Motorists will also receive a top-up of screen wash if needed – we've listed the full checks included below.

The free checks, which can be booked online, are available in more than 650 Halfords garages and stores across the country.

To book, you'll need to provide your car registration number and postcode.

Halfords told The Sun the offer will be available indefinitely, although it has a maximum capacity of 25,000 checks each week.

The retailer has been offering free car checks for NHS staff and emergency workers since March, but it's now extending the offer to all motorists.

BELOW is what motorists will get included in the free check at Halfords.

It comes as research has found that 22 per cent of drivers haven't used their car since last month, based on a poll with 2,000 adults.

Motorists are responsible for making sure their vehicle is safe to drive.

The government recommends checking things such as the windscreen, lights and brakes every time you drive – you can check out the full list on the GOV.UK website.

Of course, instead of getting help from Halfords, motorists can also complete the checks themselves before getting back on the road.

Alternatively, Kwik Fit also offers free car checks across the UK.

These include checking the tyres, battery, coolant and anti-freeze, wiper blades, windscreen wash system and light bulbs.

There are over 600 Kwik Fit centres. You can find your nearest on Kwik Fit's website.

Graham Stapleton, Halfords’ chief executive, said: "The easing of restrictions and the advice to avoid public transport means there are likely to be more cars on our roads.

"Our insight shows that due to the lockdown, one-in-five members of the public haven’t used their car in a month, so that’s why we are offering this £15 check for free.

"It means that we can support drivers and give them peace of mind and help to prevent any motoring surprises for when they get back on the road.

"Having your car checked by an expert should help give drivers that extra reassurance they need."

At the end of May, Halfords reopened 53 stores to customers for the first time since coronavirus lockdown.

Halfords has been allowed to stay open throughout lockdown but it shut stores and operated online and from store car parks instead.

The bike and motoring retailer then reopened a further 100 stores across the country last week.
